College update: Catching up with Routt County collegiate athletes

Cody Miles, football

2010 graduate of Soroco High School, redshirt junior at Fort Lewis College

In a 51-16 loss to Colorado Mines on Oct. 12, Miles recorded a pair of tackles, including one for a loss, and led the team in pass breakups with two. The following week, in a 42-point loss to Colorado Mesa, Miles again had a pair of tackles.

Colleen King, volleyball

2010 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, senior at University of Denver

In the Pioneers’ five matches since Oct. 7, King has been a force in front of the net. The senior compiled a combined 63 kills, 82 assists and 31 digs. Despite going just 2-3 over the span as a team, King led her squad in the kills department in three of the matches, including 18 in Denver’s loss to Purdue-Indianapolis on Saturday.

Courtney Garth, soccer

2010 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, senior at Lake Forest (Ill.) College

During the Foresters’ 4-1-1 record since Oct. 10, Garth has started all six games from her defender position. Garth recorded two shots on goal in last Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Benedictine. At 6-2-1 overall, Lake Forest is third in the Midwest Conference standings.

Shelby Struble, soccer

2011 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, junior at Milwaukee School of Engineering

The Raiders are 5-2 as a team since Oct. 8 with one game remaining on the schedule on Wednesday. Struble started all seven games in that stretch.

Maggie Stanford, volleyball

2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, sophomore at Sewanee: The University of the South

Even though Stanford’s Tigers have struggled to a 1-6 record since Oct. 11, Stanford has seen meaningful time off the bench. Stanford has combined for 23 kills and 17 digs in the seven matches. Stanford also broke into the starting lineup in Sunday’s loss at Hendrix.

Meghan Lukens, Kate Verploeg and Hannah Samlowski, ice hockey

Graduates of Steamboat Springs High School, students at University of Colorado and Colorado State University

Lukens and Verploeg, who play for CU, squared off with Samlowski and the Rams on Oct. 11, Oct. 12 and Oct. 19. CSU got the better of the Buffaloes, winning all three games, including a 4-1 win in the season-opener. Lukens has a pair of points on the season, and Verploeg has seen action in all three games in her first season on the team. Samlowski has played in three of CSU’s four games so far.

Christi Valicenti, tennis

2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, sophomore at Lake Forest University

The Foresters rolled to a 5-1 win over Carroll in the opening round of the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament. Valicenti won the No. 2 singles matchup in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. She followed that up with a No. 1 doubles victory alongside Sarah Paulson. Lake Forest lost in the next round, 5-0, to Grinnell, when Paulson and Valicenti were narrowly edged in their doubles match, 8-6.

Megan Stabile, soccer

2013 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, freshman at Mars Hill University

Stabile has started 13 of the Lions’ 15 games this season and punched in the winning goal in Mars Hill’s 3-2 overtime win over Brevard on Friday. It was Stabile’s only goal of the season, but she has recorded 10 shots.
