CNCC to host ribbon cutting, open house Monday in Craig

The new Colorado Northwestern Community College campus is almost finished. School officials will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon Monday to open the campus. Tours will be provided afterward. The event is free and open to the public.

Gene Bilodeau is hoping for a strong public turnout for Colorado Northwestern Community College's upcoming open house.

"The more, the merrier," the vice president of administration said. "It's the community's college. And, the more of the community that can come and appreciate it, the better."

CNCC officials will cut a ribbon to signal the opening of the college's new facilities at noon Monday at 2801 W. Ninth St. The event will include guided tours of the facility and light refreshments.

Attendees will include CNCC President Russell George, and Dr. Nancy McCallin, president of the Colorado Community College System, among others.

"We hope to have Sen. Jean White here, and the mayor and a member of the (Moffat) County Commission," Bilodeau said.

Construction of the new Craig campus began in spring 2010. That work is nearly finished, Bilodeau said.

"We'll be pretty much done," he said of the Monday opening. "There will be just a couple of sections inside that won't be finished yet, but they're near completion."

The guided tours will begin shortly after the ribbon cutting.

"The tour will start with the Career Tech Center, which houses our specialized mine training, our auto tech classroom, massage therapy, cosmetology, EMS and (mine safety health administration) training," Bilodeau said.

The tech center, Bilodeau said, will allow the college to expand.

"It will expand the number of students we can have enrolled in the programs," he said.

Next, the tour will move to the academic building, he said.

"We'll take people through and show them the ceramics studio, the academic classrooms, the science labs, the nursing area and our adult learning assistance area," he said. "We'll actually have instructors from those programs there to show people around those specific areas."

Afterward, guests are welcome to tour the campus on their own.

Bilodeau said the community should attend the event for two reasons.

First, the new campus has the potential to help the community and its economy grow.

"For the community, what that means to them is more options, more choices," he said. "When we look at having people coming into our community, oftentimes they look at our education system and our medical facilities. We'll have a brand new higher education facility that is state of the art."

Second, Bilodeau said the community has a share in the construction.

"Local taxpayers helped fund the CNCC Craig campus," he said. "So, they'll have an opportunity to come up and see how some of their tax dollars were put to use."
