CNCC aviation student soars

Julie McCallister is the epitome of hard work and dedication. Not only in her schoolwork, but also in her achievements as a member of CNCC’s National Intercollegiate Flight Association flight team.
As a first-generation college student, Julie McCallister graduated this spring with an Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Flight as well as several additional certifications that set her apart from her fellow students.

Julie comes by her drive naturally. Her support system has pushed her to be great in all aspects of her life. Julie’s mom immigrated from Kyrgyzstan 25 years ago, so Julie grew up immersed in both Russian and American traditions.
“My family taught me the value of hard work and the importance of always striving for excellence,” said McCallister. “They also instilled in me the belief that kindness and compassion are just as important as success. Those values have become a major part of who I am today.”
Not only has her family encouraged her success, but her instructors have as well.
“Julie requested additional mentoring and the opportunity to teach the class, and Nathan Shull, our senior flight instructor, took her under his wing and has been instrumental in her success. I am very proud of Julie, and I am equally proud of Nathan Shull for being such a positive influence and mentor to her,” said Nathan Hardin, Director of Aviation Technology.
Julie is never satisfied and continues to set ambitious goals to reach that next level, and her success in the aviation program is evidence of that.
“I constantly push myself to grow and improve,” Julie said. “I’ve done that by continually working toward and earning new aviation ratings.”
Less than 10% of women work in aviation as pilots, technicians, or mechanics. Julie is one of the few who will work in this field and excel, and she has a message to little girls all around with the same dreams.
“Follow your dreams and never let anyone convince you that your goals are too big or too difficult to achieve,” Julie said. “No stereotype or expectation should ever stand in your way.”
Julie has found her passion at CNCC, so she has decided to stay. After graduation, Julie plans to become a Certified Flight Instructor at CNCC and continues to work on her multi-engine rating this summer.
Recently, CNCC was named top 2-year school in the NIFA Safecon Championships at the end of May. Julie’s contribution included a second place finish in Certified Flight Instructor competition and a 16th place finish in Shortlanding competition.
