CMS volleyball bumped in 3

John Vandelinder

— Sometimes having more talent doesn’t always add up to a victory.

So said head coach Becky Field, after her Craig Middle School volleyball team went on the road and lost to Steamboat Springs on

Saturday.

“We definitely had more talent on the court,” Field said. “Their coach and even the referees said so after the game.”

Still, the Bulldogs lost in a three-game match, 21-25, 25-11, 10-15.

Volleyball teams typically try to get three touches on their offensive side of the net – bump, set and spike, Field said. At the middle school level most teams just want to get the ball back over the net.

Not the Bulldogs.

“Our kids are playing the game the way it is supposed to be played,” Field said. “They work hard to do it right.”

Field said working on multiple offensive sets, covering the entire court and being ready to return the ball no matter how many times the opposition hits it first, are the keys for her girls.

“A lot of the time Steamboat just returned the ball after we served, or maybe hit it twice, but rarely did the they have three offensive touches,” she said. “It caught us off guard. We were on our heels because we were waiting for that third touch – and it never came.”

Field praised her girls’ serving ability. Heather Jenkins was 12 of 14 on service points, Annie Sadvar, 11 of 12, and Adrie Camp, 9 of 10.

“All the girls served well,” Field said. “I’m really proud of the way they are learning the game.”

CMS hosts Hayden Middle School today at 4 p.m.

“Hayden is a scrappy team,” Field said. “I like the challenge.”
