CMEDP Column: Join the effort

As I walked into the office of my new position, perched on the southwestern hill overlooking the city of Craig, two weeks ago, I felt lucky. I felt a sense of pride and humility that I have the opportunity to be an advocate for and a representative of our businesses and industry partners as the executive director of Craig/Moffat Economic Development Partnership and Marianna Raftopoulos Business Success Center. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly and a job at which I will work hard.

I join a board of dedicated businesspeople who are working hard to attract new businesses, support and grow our existing companies and provide one-on-one free, confidential consultations to help turn dreams into realities. We are also pursuing various grant opportunities to further those missions in our community.

It’s important to us to offer educational opportunities to business owners and employees as well. We partner on many informational workshops with other community agencies, such as one planned for later this month thanks to Colorado Workforce Center. “Salaried, Hourly and Fair Labor Standards Act Changes: What the Heck Just Happened?!” is scheduled for 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 14 at Colorado Northwestern Community College, Room 175, 2801 W. Ninth St. This session is free and will cover the changes to the act and what employers need to be doing now to prepare for December. Michael Santo of Bechtel & Santo, an employment law firm serving Northwest Colorado, will present the session. Please RSVP to 970-824-3246 or darcy.owens@state.co.us.

Our strategic plan — created with input from our partner agencies Craig Chamber of Commerce and Moffat County Tourism Association — is balanced amongst retention and growth and includes the necessary and welcome collaboration with all of the community agencies that also hold economic development close to their missions as they move the city and the county forward.

I’d like to invite you to be a part of that team and to also take advantage of the many programs we offer to our existing and potential business owners. Join us in our mission by becoming a member agency or give me a call to discuss how we can help you to start or grow your business.

We’re here to help and we value you in our joint efforts to see Moffat County succeed.
