Closures put in place due to fire in Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area

— Areas in and around the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area have been closed because of a lightning-caused fire that was discovered Tuesday.

The closures affect the Wolverine Basin area and the North Lake Trail, which is Forest Trail 1164.

The size of the South Fork Fire still was reported as being 6 acres on Thursday. There was minimal fire activity and a low potential for growth.

A helicopter was on the way to the fire Thursday morning and will be used to gather information about the fire. The U.S. Forest Service has chosen not to send firefighters in to fight the fire because of safety concerns. Plans are in place should the fire move west toward the wilderness boundary.
