City Championship begins today

— By Monday, the choice parking spot at Yampa Valley Golf Course might be occupied by a new car.

The Craig City Championship will tee off at 7:30 a.m. today and 8 a.m. Sunday, and more than 90 golfers will have a chance to win the top parking spot – the top prize in the Championship.

One winner will be selected from the 15 women and more than 70 men out on the links.

All participants must be members of the Yampa Valley Golf Course’s club.

Ann Marie Roberts, LPGA golf pro at the course, said other prizes include cash and a trophy. But the parking spot, currently held by Nick Bomba and Amanda Back, is the real prize.

“The winner gets the parking spot for the year,” she said. “With your name on it, no one can park there for the rest of the year, except for you.”

Golfers might have difficulty overcoming Bomba, who has put on a clinic during the past three City Championships, winning them all.

Roberts said the Championship started shortly after the course debuted and has been popular because it only features members of the golf club.

“It’s fun because it’s just for the people here,” she said. “And it’s all local people.”
