There’s more than one place local children can get candy this Halloween.

And, in many cases, they don’t have to go from door-to-door to get it.

A plethora of events are scheduled Friday for youths in search of candy and fun on Halloween night.

Trick or Treat Street, sponsored Craig Downtown Business Association, allows children to seek sweets from participating businesses.

“As long as they’re downtown, they’ll get plenty of candy,” DBA Treasurer Carol Wilson said.

The event begins promptly at 4 p.m. and continues until 6 p.m. Friday. At least 40 businesses, including those in the 400 and 500 blocks of Yampa Avenue and surrounding blocks on Victory Way, are planning to open their doors to trick-or-treaters.

Last year, the annual event drew in about 800 children, Wilson said.

Trick or Treat Street is free, both for youths and businesses that want to participate. No registration is required.

“Just have your door open,” Wilson said.

From 7 to 10 p.m. today and Friday, youths and adults who prefer terror to treats can visit Craig House of Horror, located on Victory Way near Brass Key Realty. Entry costs $5 for students $7 for adults.

Even residents who aren’t looking for a fright can visit the House of Horror during no-scare hours, from 6 to 7 p.m. for an entry fee of $5.

Craig churches also will open their doors to trick-or-treaters this Halloween.

Calvary Baptist Church will host its Fall Fun Fest from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, 1050 Yampa Ave. Food, prizes and games, including a dart throw and ring toss, will be available. All activities are free.

“It’s fun for all ages,” Calvary Baptist secretary Janet Wright said.

Ridgeview Church of God is planning to host a similar event. Its Harvest Festival takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church, 690 Riford Road, and will offer games, prizes and candy for local children.

The church will serve free hot dogs, nachos and lemonade. There is no charge for entry.

The best part of the event: “Giving the kids an alternative to trick-or-treating (in) someplace safe they can come and have fun and still get all their candy,” said Tonia Herring, Ridgeview Church of God member.

In addition to offering games and a piñata for children, Yampa Valley Baptist Church’s Fall Festival also will feature a chili cook-off, said Rosie Potter, wife of Dale Potter, Yampa Valley Baptist Church pastor.

The festival is scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, 3900 E. Victory Way. Entry is free, and all attendees are welcomed to dress up as characters or animals from the Bible.

“It’s a substitute for trick-or-treating,” Potter said. “We don’t want the kids to be out on the street, but we don’t want them to miss the fun that other kids have.”

Residents and visitors alike can find a meal at St. Mark’s Episcopal and Lutheran Church of Grace’s chili supper, which takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 657 Green St.

For a donation, attendees can choose either either dine in or carry a chili meal home with them. Proceeds benefit the church.

Craig Christian Church’s annual Funfest, which runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, 960 W. Victory Way, will feature food, live music game booths. Entry is free. A dinner, including hot dogs and beverages, will be sold for $3 per meal.

Tickets for activity booths will sell for 10 cents each, and games at most booths will require between two and six tickets to play.

Event proceeds benefit Joyful Noisemakers, the church’s after-school choir for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

“It’s our one annual fundraiser,” Craig Christian Church Treasurer Terri Robinson said.
