CHSAA ready to make Pepsi Center new home
The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has all but landed a deal with the Pepsi Center to be the host site for the two showcase events in the state the boys and girls basketball tournament and the wrestling tournament.
“We have been in negotiations with the Pepsi Center for several months,” said Bert Borgmann, assistant commissioner of the Colorado High School Activites Association. “We have been working on the details for the agreement. We just haven’t signed the contract yet, but we expect to sign one in the next couple of months.”
The battle over ownership of the arena and Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets has not affected the CHSAA move to the Pepsi Center, Borgman said.
Instead, CHSAA has been working out details concerning labor costs, ticket prices and arena use.
The state wrestling tournament, with four classifications, will be Feb. 17-19. The state basketball tournament, which involves boys and girls players in 5A and 4A, will be March 8-11.
“We all know that the Pepsi Center will be the ideal drawing place,” said Borgman. “The newness of the Pepsi Center alone will draw additional fans.”
The state wrestling tournament has been at or near capacity in attendance for championship night. The basketball title games which are also televised, have attracted many fans.
The first official scholastic event at the Pepsi Center will be played Dec.1.
