Christopher Gingrich: Angels’ Rivera snubbed for All-Star Game
Craig — OK, we’re pretty much halfway through the MLB season and the All-Star Game in St. Louis is coming up next week.
The rosters for the National League and the American League have been announced, but I still have one question.
How did Josh Hamilton make the American League roster? I know, I know, the fans vote on it.
They made a serious mistake in voting for Hamilton to be on that team. I think there were some better options out there who deserved a spot in the lineup more than Hamilton.
Hamilton has had a woeful year and is hitting just .240 with 24 RBIs, 20 runs and 6 home runs. I think someone like Juan Rivera of the Los Angeles Angels was more deserving, but that’s just my opinion.
Speaking of Juan Rivera, I think it’s about time fantasy owners go and pick him up before he is not available anymore.
The guy is having a great year in left field for the Angels, and he is ranked just outside of the top 100 players in Yahoo right now.
Just to get you motivated to pick him up, here are his numbers for the past month: 17 runs, 9 home runs, 26 RBIs, a .315 batting average, and he is ranked No. 18 for the past month.
If I could label anyone a great pick up right now, it would be Rivera.
I think it’s also time to take a look at Stephen Drew, of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
For the past month, he’s ranked No. 61 in the Yahoo game with 19 runs, 4 homers, 18 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.
Some experts thought this was going to be his breakout year, and it’s still possible he could have a great second half to make up for his not-so-fantasy-friendly start.
There is not much depth at the shortstop position, so if you’re in need of someone who can produce and has great upside, look no further than Drew.
There are also a couple other players who have been heating up in the past week who I think I should share with you.
• Hideki Matsui, outfield, New York Yankees
• Marlon Byrd, outfield, Texas Rangers
It’s a long season for fantasy baseball players, but I’ll be here the rest of the way to help you in your quest for dominance.
