Centennial committee ready to approve merchandise

— Ray Beck thinks the Craig centennial celebration is shaping up to be something the community can mark on their calendar.

Beck, 100th Birthday Committee member and Craig city council member, gave a presentation to the committee Thursday. He showed samples for hats, shirts and cups, and a graphic rendering of the Craig centennial coin design.

It’s all starting to come together, Beck said.

“It started off kind of slow, but now we’re up and running,” he said. “Short of trying to describe it in adjectives, this is something the community can really look forward to. We’ve got a lot of events.”

One side of the coin has the Craig centennial logo. The other side displays the Center of Craig in front of an American flag in full color.

The committee plans to make minor design changes before approving the coin in the next couple weeks.

The committee hopes to order coins soon and take preorders for the holiday season. Members are still working out the price, but plan to order 1,000 coins and then gauge interest before ordering more.

Bids for hats, shirts and cups went out to three local businesses, and Beck provided some samples from each. The committee decided to hold off on making any decisions until more businesses were contacted.

The plan is to have hats and polo shirts in a few different colors. The committee decided not to order any t-shirts because they did not sell well at the Hayden centennial, Mayor Don Jones said.

Jones presented a short update on finding a band to play the final concert event in July. The choice for a band has been narrowed to three choices: Chicago, Three Dog Night and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Committee members did not make a final decision and may consider different bands in the future.

Some members raised concern that the bands weren’t country western enough. Three Dog Night was settled on as something that could attract older audiences and not alienate the younger generation.

The concert should still be for more tenured Craig residents, Jones said.

“Our target group for this centennial will be 40 to 70 (years old),” Jones said. “We want this for the people that have been here the longest.”

While the event planning is underway, so is the sponsorship drive.

The committee is ready to start sending out sponsor requests. There are four levels, and more expensive levels come with more advertising during the centennial.
