CDP Editorial: Closing thoughts

Our View

The recent closure of two restaurants in Craig could have left a void for those looking for early and easy access to food in Craig. However other local establishments have stepped up to fill that void.

The business district in Craig has taken a hit over the past couple weeks with the closing of two local restaurants.

The Golden Cavvy shut its doors Oct. 9, and Pankey’s Smoked BBQ hosted a closeout sale last week before it closed.

For anyone paying attention to the Craig business district, the closing of Pankey’s, while sad, isn’t entirely surprising. While no one could have predicted it would close based on quality of food or service — some say their brisket was some of the best on the Western Slope — the presence of a “For Sale” sign on the property for the better part of this year gave some insight into the long-term plans owner Cherratina Pankey had for the establishment.

The closure of the Cavvy, on the other hand, came as a complete shock, even to members of Craig Rotary Club, who would meet there regularly and were informed during one such gathering that the doors were closing after they left that day.

Whatever the reason — owner Charlotte Gariner hasn’t said a whole lot about the closing or what lead up to it — the Cavvy will be missed, as will Pankey’s. Both establishments provided unique culinary perspectives and filled niches in the Craig community, and their absence will leave a void.

However a few other establishments in Craig have tried to fill at least part of that void by offering earlier hours or making their products more accessible to hunters, both trademarks of the Cavvy and Pankey’s.

We want to thank the restaurants that answered the call. Especially during hunting season, it’s important to provide out-of-town guests with the kind of service that will make them want to come back. Making sure hunters have easy, early access to food goes a long way toward achieving that.

We also want to wish the best to both Cherratina Pankey and Charlotte Gariner. Closing a business is never easy, specially a business that has become a part of the community.

We hope their next endeavors are both successful and satisfying, and that they realize regardless of anything else, the Moffat County Community appreciates the blood, sweat and tears they put in to help make our corner of Colorado a little warmer.
