Carl Chapman: A small price to pay for our future
September 26, 2007
To the editor:
I am proud of the job your publisher, Bryce Jacobson, and your newspaper does to promote the well being of our city and county.
In surveys that have been done in the past in this area, more shopping has been the No. 1 concern from responders. Thanks to the Economic Development Partnership, whether people can see it or not, we have more shopping coming to Craig.
Our commissioners cannot see this fact, or they don’t want to see. Multi-billion dollar corporations such as Wal-Mart and Walgreens absolutely know what is happening in the progression of economic development in this area. They do not build in areas where the economy is going backward. Others will follow because of an active EDP.
Everything that pertains to the growth of this area depends on our infrastructure.
Education and medical facilities are the two top priorities of people moving to the area, as well as shopping.

For the well being of our youths, our schools have to be a safe haven for them. When buildings are outdated, we must move forward with replacement facilities, as well as update newer structures.
Our youths are our No. 1 priority, and I hope the taxpayers will strongly realize that in November.
I can also remember when we didn’t have a hospital or ambulance service here. When someone had a heart attack, they were put in the backseat of a vehicle and raced to the Hayden Hospital, often dying on the way.
Thanks to concerned citizens, that wasn’t acceptable, and a drive was started to raise money to help build The Memorial Hospital.
Through the many years since, it has been added on to to accommodate new technology to the point that it has become a piece-meal structure. The only way to recruit and retain the best doctors and medical providers is to build a facility worthy of them.
If the bond issues pass in November, the average homeowner will see less than $100 per year tax increase. What a small price to pay for something that is so important to us, our neighbors and our loved ones.
Please vote yes for the schools and the hospital, and support the EDP.
