Car show in downtown Craig Saturday

While the chainsaws of Whittle the Wood will be revving up throughout Saturday at Loudy-Simpson Park, another section of Craig will be celebrating things with a different kind of motor.

The 400 and 500 blocks of Yampa Avenue will be gleaming with the chrome and metal of past and present during the Bear River Young Life and Colorado Cruisers Car and Motorcycle Show.

Contestants have an opportunity to win $2,500 at a drawing later in the day.

Auto enthusiasts will get the chance to see classic cars and bikes of all different kinds in the event, a Craig staple of nearly every summer since 2004. About 50 entrants have already pre-registered for the show, which Colorado Cruisers President George Vassek takes as a good sign.

"The pre-registered people are only about a third or even a fourth of how many cars we usually have," he said.

The total number of entries last year was 135, with competitors hailing from seven different states.

Registration starts at 8 a.m., and the festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with concessions and other fun activities during the day, such as a Poker Walk. For a $10 entry, participants can pick up playing cards from five downtown Craig businesses, with prizes awarded to the best poker hands assembled from each collection. Each deck will also have a few surprises in it.

Admission is free for the car show, and spectators can purchase tokens for $1 apiece to vote for their favorite entries in 14 categories, including Best Muscle Car, Best Hot Rod and Best in Show.

Vassek said he will be showing off three of his own classic cars this year: a 1957 Chevy, a 1930 Model A coupe, and a 1976 Pontiac Catalina.

"I just like the older cars, all of them," he said. "They all look so different, and cars today all look the same. I also like the people who turn out for these things, we get to see them at all the different shows we go to."

Bear River Young Life Area Director David Pressgrove will be making announcements throughout the day. His favorite part of the event is being able to collect funds for Young Life's summer activities, as well as the overall sense of community spirit that comes from bringing people together.

"We've had a couple thousand people show up the last couple years," he said. "There's people coming in from all over Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and someone from Texas this year, so it'll be a good array. It's fun to be able to see people's passion for vehicles and be part of that."
