Business Profile: Pam Young

Name: Pam Young

Name of business/address: Sundrop Custom Framing, Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way

What prompted you to open your business in Craig?

I’ve lived here my whole life, and I bought an existing business from my employers when I was 19. Opening Sundrop Framing allowed me to bring my daughter to work and not have her raised by a babysitter.

How did you get into your line of business?

Picture framing was my first job when I was 16. I’ve always had a creative side since high school, and this business allows me to be creative every day.

Describe your philosophy of being a good business person.

Truly respect and appreciate each customer. They have chosen to do business with you. Never take that for granted. Without each one of them, you wouldn’t be in business.

How do you define the role of your business in the community?

We are the only picture framers in this area. We have produced small projects such as mat cutting, designing and framing the 2005 high school composite.

What’s the best part of your job?

Gratification of being self-employed and being able to spend time with my husband and daughter. Doing a job I love.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Being self-employed occasionally takes a lot of hours. Balancing my roles of being a business owner, mother and wife can be very challenging at times.

What advice would you give to a young person considering opening his or her own business?

Go for it. But make sure that it is something you really enjoy doing.
