Bullpups begin basketball season

The Craig Middle School boys basketball teams split a pair of games against the SoRoCo Falcons Thursday at the middle school gym to open the season.

The Bullpups seventh-grade A team outlasted the Falcons, 31-26, and the eighth-grade Falcons ran past the Bullpups B team, 31-14.

“It was an exciting game and we had fans on their feet at the end of the game,” said seventh-grade coach Lori Dodge. “At the start of the game we got ahead and at the end we kind of came apart, but we were able to hang on for the win. At the end we did have some fast breaks and they looked good. You always have that first game jitters and they were excited and pumped up and ready to play all day long.”

Offensively for the seventh-grade Trevor Simons paced the team with 14 points. Daniel Tague chipped in with eight points and Hugo Quezada finished with five points.

For the eighth-graders, Cody Christensen was the only player on the team to score more than two points, finishing with four points.

“We did have a slow start in the first half, but we played a lot better in the second half,” said eighth-grade coach Tom Nagoda. “We have a number of rookies on the team and everybody got to play a lot. As the game progressed we did a lot better and we will go upward from here.”

The Bullpups will next be in action at 9 a.m. Saturday when they host Steamboat Springs at the middle school gym.

“We know that Steamboat Springs will be a little harder team,” said Dodge. “We got that first game under our belt and we will work on a few things Friday and we will be ready to play on Saturday.”
