Bulldogs start home stretch

Home sweet home.

With three homes games left in the season the Moffat County High School varsity football team looks forward to the home-field advantage down the stretch.

The homestand begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the high school field when the Glenwood Springs Demons come to town.

After a thrilling 18-17 victory over the Steamboat Springs Sailors Friday, the Bulldogs come into the game with a 3-4 overall record and stand at 2-2 in league play. The Demons are 1-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference.

“Every game is big now, because we are fighting for a playoff spot,” said Bulldogs coach John Haddan. “We had that big win in Steamboat Springs and we need to come back and play another good game against Glenwood Springs.”

Haddan believes his defense will have to have another huge game if the Bulldogs are going to come up on top.

“Glenwood Springs has a pretty good little football team,” said Haddan. “They have a pretty high-powered offense and a couple of good running backs. They have a nice little passing game and we will have to shut that down. They are a team not to overlook. They have battled some of the best teams in our league and it should be a good game.”

Last week against Steamboat Springs, the Bulldogs finished with 409 total yards. Quarterback Jeff Gaylord, a junior, was six for 16 passes for 138 yards.

Wide receiver Kevin Voorhees, a junior, finished with three catches for 65 yards.

On the ground, running back Frank Counts, a senior, had 122 yards and two touchdowns and Nathan Browning, a junior, finished with 110 yards.

“On offense we need some guys to step up,” said Haddan. “Last week the whole offensive unit had a good game for us and we need to build on that and go from there.”

Against the Sailors, wide receiver Eric Duran, a senior, had a critical touchdown in the third quarter by catching a 53-yard pass.

“I thought it was about time to have that touchdown and I was really pleased with the heart that everybody showed on the team,” said Duran. “During the game our offense did really good and it’s starting to show in practice. We are executing a whole lot better this week and everything seems to becoming into one.”

A week ago the Demons fell to the Delta Panthers, 31-0.

“It was the one game that we didn’t show up and play,” said Demons coach Craig Denny. “Honestly, we should be about 4-3 because three games we lost by 18 points.

“We lost to Steamboat Springs by three and Gunnison by eight points.”

Denny said his team has the desire to win and play hard.

“The kids want to play and they want to win,” he said. “We only have eight seniors on the whole squad and 17 juniors. We are starting a few sophomores. It’s been kind of a tough road this year.”

Denny believes the game will be a defensive battle.

“Just watching Moffat County play their defense is great,” said Denny. “If they lack anything it’s their offense, because it’s not clicking as well as it should. I see the game being low scoring affair. It shouldn’t be a blowout.”
