Sunday was a day when nothing went right for head coach Mark Samuelson and his Moffat County Bulldogs club hockey team.

The Bulldogs followed up an inspired tie game against the Kremmling Cattle Kings on Dec. 17 with a 9-2 defeat at the hands of the same team.

“We weren’t taking care of the puck or catching passes very well,” Samuelson said. “One of our biggest issues this season has been not finishing, and we weren’t able to do that again against (Kremmling).”

The game, which was played at the Moffat County Ice Arena, was tied 1-1 with less than four minutes left in the first period.

That’s when Kremmling opened things up.

The Cattle Kings scored three goals in the last four minutes of the first and one goal in less than 15 seconds to open the second period.

“Our forwards weren’t helping the defense or goalie much,” Samuelson said. “That allowed (Kremmling) to breakout and score often.”

Cade Bangs scored the first goal for the Bulldogs with 6:23 left in the first period to tie things up.

Bangs, however, said the damage was already done.

“When the team goes down by one, I notice a lot of heads starting to hang,” he said. “Right after they scored, I could see it, and it affected our game for a little bit.”

Bangs said the goal was dedicated to family friend Orvie Zimmerman, who after having a bad week, asked Bangs to put a goal in for him.

Bangs said he felt the Bulldogs held the puck more, but the Cattle Kings took advantage when they were on offense.

“Out defense was playing too close, and (Kremmling) had a guy behind them all the time,” he said. “When one of their defenders got the puck in their zone, they would just pop it up and they would have a guy there to break away.”

While the teams were close in shots on goal, 28 for the Bulldogs and 29 for the Cattle Kings, Bulldogs captain CJ Walt said Kremmling took advantage of opportunities.

“Kremmling was just better today on capitalizing on their opportunities,” Walt said. “They got goals off their opportunities and it just wasn’t our day.”

Walt scored the Bulldogs second goal with just under five minutes left in the second period.

The Cattle Kings, however, again scored in less than 15 seconds to open the third period to put the score at 7-2.

The Bulldogs’ offense had opportunities as well, Samuelson said, but couldn’t take advantage of them.

“There were many times we were in the crease or the slot and couldn’t put the puck in the net,” he said. “It was a tough day for our guys.”

The Bulldogs will travel to Jorgensen on Jan. 8 to play Durango and Gunnison.

Walt said the team wouldn’t have a problem putting the Kremmling game behind them.

“We have to come to practice and make the best of the time we have,” he said. “We have a lot to work on before the next game.

“(Kremmling) was a sloppy effort for us, but we stuck together as a team. The guys realize what they need to do.”
