Moffat County High School boys soccer team defeats Eagle Valley, 3-2

— Awesome.

That was the word Moffat County High School soccer team head coach Seth Young used to describe his team’s 3-2 victory against Eagle Valley on Saturday morning at Loudy-Simpson Park.

The excitement certainly was felt around the park as the final seconds ticked away to the Bulldogs first win after a four-game losing streak.

“After the past few games they realized they could be a lot more competitive team if they wanted to, and they just came out to win this time,” Young said.

And the determination showed on the field.

Tracy Mendoza led the team, scoring two goals, and Armando Lopez scored the final goal late in the game.

“Armando and Tracy just rocked,” Young said. “They really just had a lot of sweet opportunities that they took advantage of.”

Those opportunities came from a reorganization of players on the field and a focus on strengthening the offense and defense, assistant coach Jeff Hammond said.

The changes helped the team click.

“I think we got players where they wanted and needed to be,” Young said.

Freshman Victor Villa logged an impressive 10 saves as goalie for his first full game with the varsity team.

Villa stepped in for Bulldogs goalie Mike Lefler, who was recovering from his last game.

“I felt really good about the game,” Villa said.

Villa had an impressive save when he tipped the ball out of the goal by jumping up with outstretched hands.

“That direct kick was a beautiful save,” Hammond said.

Hammond said the Bulldogs showed a cohesiveness and drive on the field that fueled their first victory of the season.

“This is the best game they’ve played,” Hammond said.
