Bulldog varsity golf team places 14th in Delta

— One.

That’s the number of Moffat County High School golfers who have had playing experience in Delta.

When it comes to golf, having familiarity with the course is half of the strategy. “The other half is experience,” said head coach Ken Harjes.

The Bulldogs lacked both on their way to a 14th place finish out of 19 teams at a tournament in Delta.

“Golf is a game where you are punished for not knowing,” said Harjes. “Only one of our golfers have played here, and it’s a tough course.”

Senior Nick Moyer had golfed in Delta before, and it showed.

Moyer placed in the top 20, after a solid round of 82.

“Nick played well, he was steady throughout,” Harjes said.

With the golf season winding down, Harjes is using these last few tournaments, as a way to build up the confidence in his team.

“I’ve been here from the get-go,” Harjes said. “Twenty seven years I’ve been coach here, and I’m more proud of this group of guys than any I’ve had.”

Sean Smith totaled a 95, John Strahan, 101, Jake Steele, 102, and Thomas Noble, 105.

“Our team is learning a lot,” Harjes said. “We’ve had lots of improvement. The guys are chipping much better, and their confidence on the tee box is booming.”

While admitting that the Bulldogs are young and inexperienced, Harjes said that is not a negative.

“This is a great group of guys,” he said. “They always try hard. I have no complaints about their effort.”

Next up for the Bulldogs is a tournament in Steamboat Springs on Sept. 5, followed by the team’s lone home tournament the next day.
