Briefs for Aug. 25, 2011: VNA offers free cardio screenings
In honor of National Cholesterol Education Month, the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering free cardiovascular screenings every Tuesday in September at the Community Health Center.
Screenings include total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, blood glucose and body mass index.

Voice students perform free concert
The voice students of Emily Pfeifer will present The Best of Pop & Country concert at 7 p.m. Friday at the Moffat County High School auditorium, 900 Finley Lane.
The concert is free and also includes jazz, opera and Broadway hits. The students will perform hits by artists such as Carrie Underwood, Adele, Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, Cyndi Lauper and others.
UMWA group meeting Sunday
Local 1799 of the United Mine Workers of America is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Sunday at The Center of Craig, 601 Yampa Ave. For more information, call Fran Lux at 824-4134.
American Legion bingo set for Saturday at Elks Lodge
American Legion Post 62 is scheduled to host bingo Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 43 W. Victory Way. Doors now open for the games at 4:30 p.m., and games begin at 5:45 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Ninth Street closed through Sunday
Ninth Street is temporarily closed east of the intersection of Ninth Street and Cottonwood Avenue to the county/city boundary line at the top of the hill on 9th Street for about one-quarter mile for an asphalt overlay.
Ninth Street will re-open no later than Sunday.
Motorists should expect delays on Ninth Street from the intersection of Moffat County Road 7 to the intersection of Ninth Street and Cottonwood Avenue.
Ute elder to speak Monday
Clifford Duncan, an elder of the Northern Ute tribe whose ancestors lived in Moffat County, will speak at 5 p.m. Monday at the Museum of Northwest Colorado, 590 Yampa Ave.
The Museum of Northwest Colorado, the Wyman Museum, Preserving The Last Frontier and Vermillion Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society sponsor the event.
The event is free, and donations are accepted.

Schools opening doors for parents, students
Three schools in the Moffat County School District are hosting open house events this week.
An open house for new students will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane. Call the school at 824-7036.
Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave., is hosting its annual Back-to-School Night from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today. Call the school at 824-3289.
Sunset Elementary School, 800 W. Seventh St., is having an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday. Call the school at 824-5762.
Chamber mixer set for today
The next Craig Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors’ Business After-Hours Mixer is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. today at State Farm Insurance, 690 W. Victory Way.
The event is free, open to the public and includes children’s games.
