Blizzard traps rodeo team over weekend

The weekend in Golden went longer than the Moffat County High School rodeo team anticipated.

The “Blizzard of 2005” snowed the teams in at the Valley Rodeo Club’s rodeo Sunday.

“We had 2 feet of snow,” coach Casey Fawcett said. “We had 200 kids stuck there with no place to go.”

On Sunday, the rodeo was moved into an indoor arena to escape the snow. By the time the rodeo was finished, there had been a 30-car pile up on I-70 and there was no way for westbound teams to get home.

“We all dug out by noon on Monday,” Fawcett said. “It was an interesting weekend.”

When there was rodeo action, the Moffat County team had four top-eight finishes.

Sarah Fleming had a fifth-place finish in pole bending. Kendel Fawcett was fifth in breakaway roping and scored points during both days of goat tying. She had fifth- and seventh-place finishes in those runs.

Next week, the rodeo team will be in Fort Collins at the rodeo hosted by the Northern Colorado Cowboys.
