Bill Harding: Vet Clinic offers flu shots Tuesday

Bill Harding

— Vet Flu shot walk-in is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Craig Telehealth Clinic at 551 Tucker St.

If you are actively enrolled in the VA health care system and haven’t got your flu shot yet, drop in. No appointment is necessary.

The Teleclinic is closed Wednesday because of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday.

Veteran Service Organizations

Both the local VFW and American Legion posts hold monthly meetings for their members and anyone interested in joining. These meetings determine the groups’ goals, projects and fundraising activities in order to provide the services and charitable donations that they offer this community.

VFW Post 4265 meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at their Post, 419 E. Victory Way at the City Park entrance on Washington Street.

American Legion Post 62 and its Sons of the American Legion Chapter meets at 7 p.m. the 3rd Tuesday of each month at their Post, on Country Road 7, just north of Ninth Street, near the new hospital site entrance.

Membership requirements differ, based on overseas combat duty, between the VFW and Legion, but all veterans with Honorable Discharges that served during a wartime period are eligible for the Legion, and their sons and grandsons are eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Legion.

Bring a copy of your discharge papers – DD-214 – or your relative’s to the meetings. Committees review all applications prior to being sworn in.

Holiday cards

Don’t forget the troops when addressing your Holiday cards this year. Cards, both Thanksgiving and Christmas, or Get Well/Thinking of You, may be sent to: A Recovering American Soldier c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington, D.C., 20307-5001

They can also be sent to other VA Medical Centers in your area. If you know of servicemen or women from your community, send them a card as well.

The Craig Daily Press lists Craig serviceman in their Military News feature under the Local page banner. Private James A. Clift is listed in the Nov. 20 issue. Channel 9 News aired a story Nov. 20 that Walter Reed will not accept cards addressed to “any soldier” because of Homeland Security policies and possible terrorist threat.

So, I guess his good idea isn’t an effort that will get mail to just any recuperating serviceman. Therefore I guess the best bet is to send cards to servicemen and women who you know.
