Barrie: An important effort

To the editor:

On Sept. 14, advocates for the sickened uranium and nuclear weapons workers delivered a petition to Congress asking for Congressional hearings and for Congress to introduce legislation to create an independent advisory board.

This board will examine the U.S. Department of Labor’s implementation of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000, as amended.

I was one of 40-plus advocates for these workers who visited Congress to ask for this reform. That trip, sponsored by Cold War Patriots, was well worth the effort.

I recently learned that Sen. Mark Udall attached an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill, and that Congressman Ed Whitfield, R-KY, and Congressman Jared Polis, D-CO, introduced a similar, stand-alone bill.

I realize that the plight of the sickened nuclear weapons workers is not on this community’s radar. However, this advisory board, if enacted, will help former workers from the Maybell uranium mining industry or their survivors.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
