Attorney to interview for top job
Roesink remains sole applicant for district attorney's position
Deputy District Attorney Bonnie Roesink will interview next week as the lone applicant for the district attorney’s position in the 14th Judicial District.
The interview before Gov. Bill Owens and staff, scheduled for Feb. 26, comes two days before District Attorney Paul McLimans will be sworn-in as the newest judge for the 14th Judicial District.
And while Owens’ press office Tuesday said the hiring process could still be opened again, McLimans said he expects Roesink to be named his successor next week.
“They’re keeping their options open should they decide not to name her for some reason, but I’d be very surprised,” McLimans said.
Kristen Hubbell, Owens’ deputy press secretary, said the application period remains closed but might re-open if new applications arrive. The decision would be the governor’s, she said.
“There are no guidelines on what it would take to re-open the application period,” Hubbell said.
The hiring period opened Jan. 10 and closed Jan. 31 with Roesink’s resume.
Hubbell had said the governor’s office would “work to identify” additional candidates for the job, but could not specify how that would happen.
Roesink, a deputy prosecutor who has worked in Craig 16 years, applied for the job when McLimans was appointed Jan. 3 by Owens to the 14th Judicial District bench.
Roesink is unavailable for comment this week.
Owens’ selection to replace McLimans will serve until the general election of November 2004 — voters’ next chance to elect a district attorney for Moffat, Grand and Routt counties.
McLimans said his experience interviewing before former Gov. Roy Romer in 1992 for the district attorney’s job, as well as January’s meeting with Owens for district court bench, suggests the process should end soon.
In both cases, McLimans said he was told of his appointment the day following the interview.
“I hold out hope there won’t be a gap,” said McLimans, noting his departure two days after Roesink’s meeting in Denver.
