Arrest expected after truck theft

Police say they expect to make an arrest in the theft of a city truck stolen Tuesday night from the city wastewater plant on Doyan Avenue.

The thief scaled a 7-foot, barbed wire-covered gate with a large “video surveillance in use” sign to get to the pickup.

The keys were in the vehicle.

“I’d rather have them take a truck than break into the building looking for keys and do more damage,” department Supervisor Mike Frazier said.

The thief drove the truck through the department’s locked security gate, smashing the truck’s right headlight. The truck’s left side was scratched when it scraped against the gate, and the driver’s side door was damaged, police said.

The truck was abandoned at Craig City Park, where Frazier said it was found parked in the lot.

“This was foolishness,” he said. “It was random, crazy behavior.”

Another vehicle, a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, was stolen from West Ninth Street, also Tuesday night. It was found Wednesday stuck in a snowdrift west of the wastewater treatment plant.

Craig police Lt. John Forgay said the two crimes are connected and that he anticipates making an arrest soon.

“We have evidence that is being analyzed,” he said.

He said at least two people were involved in the incidents.
