Area couple hospitalized after recent car accident

A Craig couple is still in a Denver hospital after a gasoline tanker truck collided with the couple’s car Sept. 19 on Colorado Highway 9.

The accident sent Craig resident Robert Peterson and his wife, Twyla, to the intensive care unit at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital. Two friends of the Petersons, Joe and Charlene Taylor of Roosevelt, Utah, were also in the car.

Peterson and passengers were initially taken to Frisco Medical Center before being transferred to St. Anthony’s Central. Joe Taylor was released from the Frisco center. Charlene Taylor was later released from St. Mary’s.

The Petersons entered St. Mary’s in critical condition. As of Oct. 8, they were in serious but stable condition in the progressive intensive care unit. In this unit, only family members, two at a time, are allowed to visit the couple.

The accident happened five miles north of Silverthorne. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the tractor-trailer truck hauling gasoline was driven by Ronald Rust of Littleton, Colo., northbound on Highway 9. Rust, 44, was attempting to pass or change lanes when he crossed the center double yellow (no-pass zone) line. Peterson’s vehicle, a 1999 Plymouth Expresso, was traveling southbound on Highway 9 when the top of the Plymouth collided with the left-rear part of the trailer of the tanker as the tanker attempted to move back into its lane.

The tanker became twisted, rolled one-quarter time onto the top of the Plymouth and continued to roll before coming to rest in the southbound ditch.

The Petersons’ car also came to rest in the southbound ditch. The Petersons’ car was equipped with airbags and they did deploy.

Both vehicles were totaled and Rust was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury. Rust received minor injuries, not requiring hospitalization.

Cards and letters may be sent to: Bob and Twyla Peterson, St. Anthony’s Central Hospital, 4231 W. 16th Ave., Denver, Colo. 80204.
