Activity van to commute from Maybell to Craig
Maybell students will once again have the opportunity catch a ride to after-school activities in Craig. One of the 15-passenger vans owned by the Moffat County School District will be stationed in Maybell for commuting to Craig.
According to Moffat County School District Transportation Director Jim Baptist, a van committee in Maybell has been set up to handle scheduling. The van will be available to Maybell students Monday through Friday and during the weekend, if it is needed for other trips.
According to Dawn Nottingham, van committee chairman, about seven community members expressed interest in driving the van. In terms of drivers, “we are pretty well covered and it should work well,” Nottingham said.
The activity van will be used for sporting activities and for school work. According to Nottingham, some students get on the school bus after school, not having the time for additional school work with school resources.
Interested drivers will need to be certified and there will be a class Saturday. Nottingham is looking forward to seeing how it will all work.
“This is really a trial period,” said Nottingham. “We do have a lot of kids who would do more activities if they knew they had a way in and out (of Craig).”
According to Nottingham, Maybell had an activity van program in place 15 to 20 years ago. Now the high school students are once again populating Maybell and a van will serve the community well, she said.
Cost of using the van will be 31 cents per mile plus the cost of fuel, according to Baptist. This cost will cover van maintenance.
The body recovered from a drowning at Harvey Gap Reservoir has been identified.
