220-acre wildfire near Fruita fully contained
The Skipper Island Fire that charred 220 acres of land on both sides of Interstate 70 near Fruita over three days was 100 percent contained late Friday afternoon, although fire crews plan to monitor the area over the next several days, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire — which began Wednesday evening when a camper’s attempt to dispose of his toilet paper got out of control in a densely overgrown area of the Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area — was a challenge to fire crews who fought for access to the thickly foliaged area, according to sheriff’s spokesperson Megan Terlecky.
