TMH announces CEO finalist

The Memorial Hospital

The Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees announced at a Thursday special board meeting that James I. Marshall is a finalist for the CEO position at the hospital, according to a press release. The board interviewed a total of four candidates before selecting Marshall as a finalist.

In February, the board initiated a search for candidates to fill the CEO vacancy created when Chris Smolik resigned his position in January. Mike Mullins, a regional vice president of Quorum Health Resources — TMH’s management company — conducted a nationwide search.

“In February, I met with the hospital’s board members, medical staff and leadership to gather information about the skills and abilities they were looking for in a CEO,” Mullins said in a statement. “Their feedback gave me the direction I needed to find strong candidates.”

At the May 1 board meeting, board members were presented with a list of candidates and their qualifications. The board also discussed the interview process they would follow. Recognizing the importance of involving as many stakeholders as possible the board developed a multiphase interview process that included medical staff, department and senior leadership and the board.

“It is the goal of this board to find a CEO who will be the right fit for TMH and this community,” TMH Board Chairman Don Cook said in a statement. “We want a person who is visible both inside the hospital and out in public. We are looking for a candidate with a strong background working in critical access hospitals, managing physicians and physician practices, and who has developed a positive culture with staff.”

Marshall is currently the president of Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Centenary College of Louisiana and a Bachelor of Business Management from Brigham Young University–Idaho.

The board will conduct a final round of interviews the week of May 26.
