Obituary: David William Watson

Sept. 17, 1942 — Feb. 28, 2018

Craig resident David William Watson died on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, at Memorial Regional Health. He was 75.

A memorial snowmobile ride will be held at 9 a.m., Sunday, March 11, at the Craig Middle School parking lot. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

David William Watson was born the son of James William and Mary (Taylor) Watson on Sept. 17, 1942, in Crawford, Colorado. He spent his childhood and attended public schools in Crawford. Dave graduated from Crawford High School with the class of 1960. On June 4, 1961, Dave married the love of his life, Linda L. Hovey, in Crawford, Colorado. To this union, two children were born.

The Watson’s resided in Nucla, Colorado, where Dave worked in a uranium mine. They later moved to Crested Butte, where Dave worked in construction. During that time, he also built ski trails and worked on and resold snowmobiles. In 1976, the Watson’s came to Craig for a job. After a couple of months, they decided to make Craig their home. Dave worked at Trapper for 27 years. He and Linda also owned and operated High Country Sports from 1991-2003.

In his spare time, Dave enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, square dancing and trips to the cabin. He was a member of Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club, Yampa Valley OHV Trail Riders Club, Moffat County Land Use Board, Moffat County Search and Rescue and Wilderness Ranch Homeowners Association. In 2012, Dave proudly received Groomer of the Year from the Colorado State Snowmobile Association.

Above all, Dave was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Dave is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Watson, of Craig; one son, Randy (Kathy) Watson, of Craig; one daughter, Wanda (Pat) McBride, of Grand Junction; one brother, J.T. (Bobbie) Watson of Palisade; and one sister, Regina Kendall of Rangely. Dave is further survived by two grandchildren, Misty and Bahnay Watson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Dave’s memory to the Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club or to Moffat County Search and Rescue both in care of Grant Mortuary.
