Obituary: Calista Hamill
January 10, 1934 – September 14, 2021
Calista Eliot Hamill was born on January 10, 1934 in Memphis, Tennessee to Theodore and Mignon Eliot. She spent her early childhood in Memphis, Tennessee. The family later moved to Tucson, Arizona, due to her father’s job as an Anatomy Professor. She completed high school in Tucson, Arizona and went on to attend what was then known as Colorado A & M (now Colorado State University) receiving her B.S. in Sociology. She graduated college in 1956. While attending college, she met her husband, Jacob (Jake) Albert Hamill. Shortly after graduation, they were engaged then married on January 3, 1957 at Kirk of Bonnie Brae in Denver, Colorado. The couple moved to Hamilton, Colorado to settle and work Jake’s family ranch. Calista got a job in town at Moffat County Department of Public Welfare. In September of 1957, they welcomed their first daughter, Robin. In December of 1958 their second daughter, Brenda was born and daughter Barbara completed their family in January of 1960. Calista primarily worked at home and on the ranch but for a short time was a school teacher in the school house in Hamilton. Calista was a member of the Moffat County Alumni of Colorado State University, The Craig Civic Club, Moffat County Wool Growers Auxiliary, Girl Scouts of America Alumni, Craig-Moffat County Library Board of Trustees, Friends of The Moffat County Libraries and many local crafting groups, ladies’ clubs and book clubs. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, watching hummingbirds and the flowers in her yard. On September 14, 2021, Calista passed away at the age of 87. She suffered health complications and passed away with her daughter, Robin by her side at Craig Memorial Hospital. Calista’s passing leaves behind many grieving friends and family members. Her smiles and hugs were always a blessing to those that knew her. She is preceded in death by: her parents, Theodore and Mignon Eliot, brothers, Andrew, Ted and Michael Eliot and sister, Robin Garstka. She is survived by: Brother Warner Eliot; sister in law Dr. Frankee Eliot; Jake Hamill, her husband of 64 years; daughter Robin Hamill (Stan Sjostrom); daughter Brenda Hamill (Paul Jobe); daughter Barbara Schueler (Bob Schueler); granddaughter, Rachelle Ferguson (Mike Ferguson); grandsons, Shane Benjamin and Spencer Benjamin; great-grandchildren, Madison, Hayden and Carson Ferguson as well as many extended family members and dear friends. Calista dedicated her life to her family and the family ranch. She was the foundation of the Hamill Family and the Hamill Ranch. To list the things that she did for her family or the ranch would be a list greater than anyone had time for. Her work was never done but she always found time to share that giant smile, a story, a joke or those warm hugs everyone loved. Her passing will remain a great loss to her family and friends but her memories will be cherished forever. A celebration of Calista’s beautiful 87 years was held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at The First Congregational Church of Craig. The family would like to welcome everyone to continue to drop by the ranch and visit with Jake. His door is always open and he would welcome the continued company. In lieu of donations or flowers, Calista requested that contributions be made on her behalf to Friends of The Moffat County Libraries.
