It's a shame plain and simple. The land, the hay, the elk, the men who seem to have pulled the trigger, and the meat wasted. A shame. It is a crime to kill anything and not use it. This is a disgrace to all ranchers and hunters. There is no excuse for what they seem to have done. These allegations are an embarrassment to our community. The display of ignorance by these men leaves me feeling very ashamed and angry. I hope they never do this again.

Native,
You argument has no logic. First off, I was talking about after this hard winter(there would be no more). They're running around right now…..starving and looking for handouts. Of course you see more right now. (good job to those who are feeding)Your logic is that if we can only feed a few then we should not feed any??? That makes sense. Your “all or nothing” way of thinking has done our culture so much good and I can see how that really applies to deer and elk. In Jackson, Wy, they successfully fed the elk for many years. There have been years when this community has depended financially on the deer and elk. Let's not forget the big bust in the 80's and early 90's. Your way of thinking when you say “Don't feed the wildlife:except when we feel sorry for them in a harsh winter?” Is way off course. You're saying that because this is the way we've done it in the past, this is also how we should continue to do it forever. What a stick in the mud. Progress is not made on the concept of past practice. Progress is something new. Positive change. I was taught from a young age that if you know what is right in your heart, you should do it. It does not mean it is going to be easy. You have to do what is right. In my heart I know it is right to help sustain the critters that keep this community alive in so many different ways. To do otherwise seems like we are selling ourselves and the deer and elk out. My hope is that spring arrives early this year and this debate is a pointless time filler that we've all wasted our time on.

It is kind of hard to call this the “Elk Capitol” when there are no elk running around. No elk = no business….oh but I forgot. We're in the middle of a gas and oil boom ….who needs the elk and deer when we've got oil, gas, skiing, etc? What will this community do when the fossil fuels are gone? then we're back to hunting and skiing as out two biggest attractions. Citizen, I hope I am wrong for your sake and mine…and that maybe I do need to get a grip. May your life be prosperous so that you can learn to treat others with respect and have respect for different views. Let's hope that granny is right and we don't lose too many.

Please feed the elk and deer. They feed and sustain this community in countless ways aside from their precious protien. The deer and elk are our brothers. Would you deny your own brother of food?

jds,
you are probably right. I should not pick on granny. I just get frustrated at times with various forms of prejudism that exist and I am not afraid to argue with anyone about the slightest hint of prejudism. I did find Granny's stereotyping offensive and allowed myself to behave in a hateful manner in the process instead of approaching it with patience and compassion. I wanted to make her look stupid because prejudism and stereotyping do seem stupid to me. Probably not the best solution. As for “White Man” being an oxymoron- or bigoted statement-I am not so sure. There are many cultures in this country and differences within each culture which define them. Different is often misinterpreted as wrong. The way I see it, we as a society need to work on appreciating the differences.

Granny,
You poor old thing. I am sorry you called yourself a bigot. If you could spell “Great Britain”, I would feel I was having an intelligent debate with someone. Therefore, I am going to waste little of my time and put this in very simple verbage so maybe you will understand. 1)Your comments have some generalized statements about various nationalities….and then your bigotry turns to Mexicans. Here is what you said “Again, it is not just -for want of a better word-don't call me a bigot-Mexicans”. The statement itself is an oxymoron. If you are sick of being called a bigot, then stop writing stupid stuff and take accountability for what you say.

Just wanted to point out the amount of prejudism being practiced on this page. “Don't call me a bigot, Mexicans” and something about being “American”. Technically, you called yourself a “bigot” and technically, Mexicans are Americans. They come from South America. Technically, part of Colorado used to be Mexico. I am a white man. I believe people should be here legally and not be allowed to get their driver's license unless they are legal. I also believe this debate has been abused so that some people do not have to look at how screwed up they are as an individual. Please, if you have issues, addressthem yourself instead of blaming mexicans for all of your problems and scapegoating them. Hitler probably said something similar when he went after the Jewish people and did horrible things in the name of prejudism and scapegoating. IN your heart, you know it is not right.
