I would support that tax. But getting around TABOR could be a problem. A registration “fee” may be easier to get implemented. I hope that there will be more comments on this vital question.
In my view, the Craig City Coucil should listen to their own lawyer. They also should bring their city charter in compliance with the US Constitution. One's right to spend one's money on one's free speech is a right no one wants abridged.
Riders in Routt County are a problem. That is something the Routt County Sheriff will have to deal with. Group rides are always a problem. Luckily, we don't have that issue here in Craig. I have ridden the Elephant Rock event in Castle Rock. 10,000 riders on 5 courses! Talk about 4 abreast! CSP got involved and some major changes were made.
I support the notion of registration fees for all bicycles. Where else will the funding come from? Perhaps with enough matching funds, we could get a grant from GOCO and really get some shoulder extentions on roads like County Road 7. I would love to ride it, but there is no shoulder and I feel it is just not safe.
Thanks for the constructive comments. I, too, will not ride on roads without a 3 foot shoulder. The best roads are those with rumble strips. the strips will give you some warning of drivers who are crowding the white line.
I agree that we need some designated bike paths here in Craig. Perhaps a registration fee be charged by the County and the City to help fund these improvements. It would be a fee that my wife and I will gladly pay. Besides, a good bike path system will give children a safe place to get around town on their bikes.
A lot of cyclist disregard stop signs and signals. I think we all have been guilty of blowing through a stop sign, particularly when there is no traffic. I know that I have. We need to be more cautous when we ride and obey traffic laws.
SB148 passed the House yesterday, 3/30/2009. It now goes back to the Senate for a final touch up. Then on to the Governor for signature.
I have been tracking this Bill since prior to Senate passage. I have written Rep Baumgardner twice about this Bill with no response. The main reason I support this Bill is that it requires motorists to give at least a three foot clearance to a cyclist. And it allows the motorist to cross a solid line to do it. I have been passed by tractor-trailer rigs with less than three feet and that is scary. With so many of the roads in the County having less than two foot shoulders, we cyclists are forced to ride in traffic lanes.
Good post, Mike. I am glad you are still around. Everyone should veiw Michael Moore's “Sicko,” his documentary about heathcare. I think it is playing on Showtime. He also spends some time in Great Briton and Cuba. Now there is an eye-opener!
Wise up, 50cal. If you have lived in smog, you know it when you see it. and I have seen it in Craig and Steamboat. It can and will happen here if something is not done about our air quality…now. Not sometime down the road, after we have a “Pinedale Problem.”
Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the Commissioners are whining. Seems that when the Congressional Delegation was Republican, we didn't hear a peep from them.
My concern is that there is no net loss of jobs, What difference is it if a person is making $25 dollars per hour makiing solar panels or working in a coal mine? The coal, and oil and gas, will run out sometime in the near future. We need to prepare for that day.
There was a study done by a firm, BBC, in conjunction with the endangered fish program in 1998? The study projected tha Craig would grow to 26,000 people by the year 2045. Moreover, Steamboat would grow to more than 65,000. Whether these predictions come true is speculation. Somebody has let the secret out that we are living in paradise!

If ya got it, flaunt it. We may only be 30%, but we will be growing.
