I would like to know the reason Rick Penner missed work. I do not condone or agree in any way short of somemething such as of an accident and being hurt. However in today's day and age and all the cellphones I cannot see how he could just disappear and not notify anyone. Even If he was in the hospital or something he could have had a family member notify the school district. with having said that I do not see any reason for Mr Penner's keep his job. If anyone else had done that for whatever the reasons they would have to face the outcome. If someonewas in the military they would be considered AWOL (absent without leave) and depending whether he was in a "war" situation such as IRAQ and found not to be a POW o severly wounded they could be punished as deserter, they could be put in prison, fined part of their paycheck and demoted some pay grades and given a Dishonorable discharge. all I can ask is "does the punishment fit the crime?

This topic has really sturred up a bee's nest. However what does it matter? While yes the elk and othey wild game animals do a lot of damage to the crops and etc. The law is the law. If someone is allowed to break the law, let me ask you, Where does it stop? If you or I do something illegal would we not be punished? I know today, by watching the media coverage, different people accused of doing something wrong or illegal they have the right to a fair and inpartial trial. However today whenever someone commits a crime and is arrested, and if they can afford a high profile attorney mny people get off. Now did they do what they were accused of? Did they get away with breaking the law? In the eyes of the court and the jury if they are acquitted they are not guilty. In some of these cases I cannot see how they get acquitted but they are. Does this then set the standard for everyone else to go out and do what they want to? In the case of O.J. "he was acquited" however many peole still consider him guilty. If he was guilty and got off then it is the judical system that has failed. That does not give anyone anyone the power to go out and do what the individual is charged with that is illegal. In our country the law is the law and is to be applied to everyone equally. Without the law I would like you to tell me what would go on if anyone or everyone runs out and break the law as they feel is right for them? Whether or not Mr. Culverwell is guity or innocent. That is not my decision to make. If he is guilty he should be punished like everone else. If he is innocent he should go free. Does this mean I condone the actions of the division of wildlife? No way but they should held accountable for their actions like everyone else is suppose be. Thank-you

Upon reading the comments from others about the Bulldogs kkcmsw points out the point that the kids reading this may be given a bad impression about their skills. I do not see this in any way. Then there is TJ30066 adequately points out the fact that we all have to learn from "the Negative" Exposure This is one of the best forms of learning. As I stated in my first comment many of the best and biggest lessons came from losing and learning how to accept that. Life does not always seem fair. This does not mean that we will always face only the negative. I say learn from both and be a good loser as well as a good winner. You will go much further in life if you learn to be humble. Life is not a bed of roses. Go out play hard and I wish you the best of luck and hopefully a winning season.

My question about the High School foorball season is: What does it matter how many games they win??? Yes I know that winning is a lot more fun than losing but its the losing that makes the team mature and better equiped to handle many things in life that you may or may not have any control over. Yes in my Senior year at MOCOHI we had a winning year but it was the other years that led up to a winning season. We did make it into the state playoffs that year but were defeated in the first game. That did more to illustrate to me that you don't always win at what you are doing.
The more important issue was that for me to play all sports I was required to maintain a certain GPA to participate in the sports. It was because of my love for sports that I kept my grades up which later qualified me to seek further education and become better prepared for the trials that I would face in life. So in my occupations thru life, I was qualified to have many aspects in and able to persue all the things I wanted to do. I have made my living for most of the last 50 years in many different fields. Some of which are, Medicine, Computers, auto mechanics, and I am an ordained minister. I also have the skills to do almost anything that would be done to maintain a house. I.e. Electrical, plumbing, wood work, and most everything else.
It has been my experience that when I lost I learned he most. Yes winning is more exciting but losing is the greater teachers. This is especially true if you have the right coaches that assist you in learning these lessons. So I sy "Go out and play the very best you know how and don't hold back. Obey the rules and have fun. But no matter how good you are there is always someone better than you. When that is he case congratulate the winners and learn from your contact with them. Good Luck, have a great season, win every time you can, but don't be able to hold your head up and honestly say,"I did the best i knew how."

Bronco Mania? Craig? What an honor to be chosed to compete for thr honor of being the town that is noted for being the best fans. I remember when the professional franchise added Denver to their list to have a professional football team. Having been born and raised in craig I have always been a fan of the Denver Bronco's. The problem I have with the professional sports is not the sport it is some of the individual plalyers and the example they are setting for our children. As a professional they should strive to set good examples for people to follow. Please don't get me wrong, I know that most of the players and the people associated with the professional teams are excellent examples for the kids today. So being the town that is trying for the title the the Bronco's most loyal followers is quite an honor.
I know that I moved from Craig many years ago however I am still a follower of the Broncos. Craig Hold your head up high so people can see your enthusiam for this title. Wear this title proudly and set the example for the youth of this great nation to follow today. God Bless Craig!!

I wish to thank grannyrett and AtitudeAdjustment for the kind remarks about my story of members of my family. I am sure that their are many other stories about people in the Craig Area that have a part in the History of Craig. Take for instance there was a young man from Craig that unfortunately was a POW in Europe. When The POW camp was liberated My Uncle Robert McClement was one of the pilots that helped carry the ex POWs home. As it turned out This POW and Robert McClement were great friends and I have been told that when they met in Europe after the POW camp was liberated they had a great reunion. I have not received permission of this POW's family to give out his name. Therefore I cannot tell you who he is. This POW after being released he was used by the military and was sent around the US for the purpose of receiving support of the American people for the war effort. My aunt (Robert's sister) was working at a reassignment facility and this ex POW came to that facility and when He and my aunt saw each other (My aunt told me) they hugged each other because they also grew up together in Craig. This ex POW looked at my aunt and said something to the effect "I can't get away from you McClements anywhere!" He told her how her brother flew him out of Europe after the liberation of his POW Camp and now he was talking to my aunt in California.( The Sister of Robert McClement.)
I am proud to say I was born and Raised in Craig. I now, however, live in Florida. I moved here in January after living for many years in New Jersey.

After reading the comments by AttitudeAdjustment I decided to go back and check some of the things that I have heard about this story. Robert (known as Bob) McClement was a pilot and he did receive permission to land his plain in Craig. It seems as though Robert McClement hadn't check checked the Craig airport as well as he should have. He landed ok but he did not have enough runway to take off again and the Army Air Cor had to come in and dismantel the airplane to remove it. Robert McClement did however receive an official repremand over this incident. Now the plane that Mr. McClement was not a jet as I first thought it was. To get the story I went to Mr. McClement's two remaining sisters to get what I could about this story. They both told me that this happened during WW II but just when eluded both of their memories. One sister was in the Navy and the other sister Was working at a military installation that would reassign the people that returned from over seas. There are a large number of stories that I have heard about Robert McClement as He was my mother's brother. Now this incident happened before my birth so it was sometime in the early 40's. As I was born after the War had ended and I am now over 60 years old. Robert McClement went on to have a very distinguished career and Retired with over 30 years of service. He had attained the rank of Lt. Col. in the USAF. Robert McClement and his wife have since passed but he does have two sons that live in the western part of the United States. He had a daughter that had kidney failure and was on dialysis for many years before she passed.
This is the story as told to me by my mother and my aunt. These two are the only ones that are still living today. Since I was born and raised in Craig and I am part of the family I have heard many stories about McClement family. I am sorry that I forgot all the small details as it has been many years ago I heard these stories. I should have checked them out better before I made the first Posting. Thank you.

While reading this article about the airport and airplaned that are a large part of the history of Craig. I was looking to see if there was mentioned of another incident that took place at the airport. I don't know exactly when this happened but I do know it did happen, It was sometime around the start of WW II. Craig had many people that went off to war. Many of them came home to Craig to visit with their families. One incident I have heard many times is about a young USAF pilot that came home to visit his family. The weather was cold and wet and the runway was described as one large mud puddle. This pilot was flying a new jet aircraft and decided to land and visit his family. He landed the aircraft and it was "buried" in the mud. The USAF sent up a truck and got the aircraft and hauled it away.
This man was one of three brothers that were in the military at that time along with one of their sisters and a cousin. Anothes sister worked in the war effort at that time. The pilot's name was Robert McClement. All three of the McClement brothers and the sister. There was one 1st cousin that was raised by the McClement's and this cousin was killed in Europe (I think France). This cousin that was killed was no other than the individual who's name is associated with an award that is has beennames to honor him. It is awarded to the outsanding senior thas has distinguished himself in sports and academics during his High School career. His name is DUDE DENT. Unfortunately the three McClement brothers have since died. The two sisters are still alive. The one sister still Lives in Colorado and the other sister lives in Florida. The two sisters had a 3rd sister but she has since passed away. The two sisters that are still alive have adult children that are now part of the senior community.
Since this article was about the history of airplanes and their role in Craig. This is just one of the other stories about the airport and airplanes that are associated with the history of Craig.

While looking at the picture of the destruction of the Craig Middle School I have a lot of mixed feelings. I went to High School in that building and spent 4 years storing memories of that time. It was a happy time and I hate to see it go. But I also realize that eventually the buildings go to make way for new facilities. I guess I am holding on to memories of the happy time in MOCOHI. I spent a lot of time in that building and I am reminded of how during wrestling season run laps in the halls. Up the stairs in the south section and down the hall and down the stairs and again down the hall to the stairs once again. In 1962 I was the Colorado Heavy Weight State Champion and I cherrish these memories. But time marches on and the new becomes ofd and must be cleared to make new for new once again.
