A comment not particular to this case and not necessarily directed to Ms.Stoffle, but which may fit: The rule of “innocent until proven guilty” is for the government to prove or disprove in a court of law. The public, including newspapers depending on how the editors wish to portray their paper, can presume anyone guilty or not. The man (or woman) who raped you could very well get off in a court of law due to some technicality or a poor prosecutor (think Anthony), but that person is none the less still guilty, especially in your eyes. Just be sure to remember that when you read articles in the paper or listen to the news. Reporting establishments will generally prescribe to the 'rule' as part of their reporting integrity or policies. I for one, wish papers and news shows would start taking more of stance against the “suspected” line and tell us what the think. To this day they still report the Ft. Hood murderer, Nidal Hasan, as “suspected” of murder when there is no presumption of innocence in this case, except for where the government is concerned.

This was an absolutely insane letter. Next thing Terri will be telling us is that we need to let our employees come to work naked because, “that's the way they look”. It's natural. Come on, its popular.” Let's get it straight, Terri, you and those “discriminated against” CHOOSE to look a certain way. Business owners choose not to hire someone because of the way they look. It is their business. Image is everything. Pull the crap out of your head and you may be surprised on how far you can go. There are other reasons why businesses don't hire people with excessive tattoos and piercings, and it isn't just the way they look.

This thread cracks me up. You have people lambasting immigrants to this country for not speaking english then attacking the private non-profit group trying to teach them English. And people wonder what's wrong with this country? You get what you ask for - immigrants learning the predominatly spoken language of English - and STILL complain. And where did “Anitadunce” come from. How do you get to a rant on illigal immigration from a discussion on what English classes should be called. I bet she's a lot of fun at a party.

Good, bring someone in from outside the community who thinks we live in a democracy. Tell me how that works for ya. I guess it really doesn't matter. The goverment indoctrination centers are so ineptly ran its almost commical that we spend $150k or so to have someone to try and run them. Ask any high school graduate if they have any idea about basic economics or credit markets or really, anything.
Well, I guess its good because we'll get a house sale in the area.

I don't think Mr. Petrone should be considered to be the superintendent. If he doesn't even know under what form of governmnet our country was formed and operates, then he shouldn't be trying to set the direction of education in our schools.
Democracy is a very dangerous form of government as we're all about to find out.

As long as you have displays of disrespect from 2 million of the faithful democratic party to former and outgoing presidents as shown at the inauguration yesterday, there will never be a “united” country. You have never seen, nor will you ever see, a display such as that at a conservative function.
Oh yes, this country cannot recover from a $1 Trillion dollar payback spending spree to a few special interest industries. I would like to wish President Obama my best since this is my country too, but when this is the great proposal that he comes up with even before taking office, I find it hard to believe he has the best, long term interests of the country at heart. I have already apologized to my children for what our leaders are about to do to them.

If you want lower oil prices, you can get them in Novmember. Vote out this current congress and get representatives in there that care about you and the economy. Its not just the democrats preventing exploration and drilling on our soil and off our coasts. The spineless republicans having been wrapping themselves in this incredible insane “global warming” scam (note: we are going into summer, so we can call it global warming again) and walking in step with democrats (original meaning of the word “democrat” is “to pander to the masses”). We have the technology and the oil. Lets get it ourselves before other countries start directional drilling it out from under us, i.e. China and Cuba.
Unfortunately, we can't do anything with the environmentalists driving all this, but we can get rational thinking representatives in office that will, and must, take a stand against them and let this country go forward. The utopian world of transportation vehicles running on air and emitting only water is so far from realty our children's children won't be seeing it.
Should we continue to explore “clean” technologies? YES, but let the free market do it. The government tried to get involved with ethanol subsidies and failed miserably, raising the price of all food commodities around the world. Private industry, without that subsidy, would have dropped that experiment long ago.
If your candidate repeats the old mantra of “NO new drilling” and “NO new refineries”, then you need to seek out another candidate. Its your wallet.

I think its just fine to print the names of those arrested. The fact of being arrested does not constitute guilt, that is for the courts to decide. The presumption of innocence until proven guilty is only a responsibility of the government. The press and the people can assume or conclude anything they want about a certain person's actions, regardless of the outcome of a trail. Knowing the names of those recently arrested could help in hiring or other business/personal decisions. Remember, to make an arrest, the officer or department must have probable cause, but even if that “evidence” is incorrect, it is usually a mistake that is made by the arrested person's association with a guilty party.

First, there are no rights in the US Constitution giving the public the right to vote in federal elections.
Second, not everyone should be allowed to vote, whether in a local election or any other election. A huge majority of the voters of this country never read the issue, learn what the position of candidates are or in many cases even know who or what the candidates/issues are until they're sitting there with pen in hand. The worst voters out there tow their party line. Those willing to vote a straight ticket for one party or another, regardless of the consequences of those votes, should never be allowed to vote.
Voting rights should be limited to those that fund the particular government or ballot issue. If it is a ballot issue that will raise property taxes in a district or town/city, then property owners should be the only people voting on it. National elections should be decided by the 50% of wage earners that pay federal income tax, not the other 50% who receive ever increasing welfare.
We are quickly become a socialist society with too much power (one person-one vote) being given to those who receive the benefits of others' hard work (income tax payers). Socialism does not work, unless you think 50% income taxes, 14% unemployment and 6 month waits for MRI scans is “working”.
Yes, the election process must change, but for the better, not by merely getting more uneducted (in the issues/candidates), party towing voters to the booth.

Absolutely amazing. Lets completely resolve all responsibility to these families. Its great they live in a community that will replace their poor life planning. A comminuty that will step up and give them the things they should be going out and buying new from their insurance money. I've been in much worse financial situations then those in that building, and always, always carried renters, homeowners, auto, life and health insurance. The sacrifices we made to be able to do that were great. The money can be found to purchase these necessities, it depends on what their priorities are. Obviously, their priorities lay elsewhere. I bet they don't get renters insurance in the future either.
