Sounds to me the federal government no longer has a monopoly on ideas to piss our money away. Our editorial board must have accessed some of gramnets meth stash.

If there was a need for more conference space than we already have one of the several new hotels that have been built would have included one in their plans. I wish our editorial board would get off their Obama worship and let free enterprise respond to our needs instead of government imposing their will.

As for their other cash cow the rec center, this was already tried back in the 1980s. We know it now as the wave pool. This was to be the cure to all our ills. People from all across the land would plan their vacations around Craig and we would be awash in cash. While I am glad we have the wave pool it is certainly not a cash cow for our local economy.

News flash to editorial board, rec centers dont make money, they cost money. If they made money every town would have one. Larger towns would have several. There would probably be a national rec center chain. If you still think rec centers are the future of economic viability in an increasingly unstable world then you should ask routt county or garfield county why they budget money to operate something you are trying to pass off as self sustaining and wildly profitable.

While I think much progress has been made by both local government and citizens on the apearance of our community in the past year we need to put to rest the idea that our local government can do no wrong and is being held back by homeowners and their trashy overgrown properties. While no one denies that there are properties that need attention I cant belive you gave the city and county a free pass. You must be under the infuence of a little holiday funk so here are a few ideas to get the creative journalistic juices flowing. The first impression people have of our town is driving in on Yampa Ave or Victory Way and that can be an adventure in the middle of winter as we try to cram three lanes of traffic into two lanes or less because we are unwilling or unable to remove snow from the sides of the street. Having to risk playing bumper cars to get through the elk capital of the world is not the lasting impression we want to leave. Besides, who has time to look at all the trashy yards when you are that fixated on just trying to ''survive the drive''. Next on my list of things to do is what passes for a sidewalk in front of the Elk River Inn on Victory Way. This patch of dirt with some gravel on top has been like this since at least the late 1970s. Its time has definitly come. Great terrain when out in the field stalking that trophy elk but in the middle of town on main street not so much. I just cant belive this has been ignored for 30 plus years. Next, how about raising the bar a little bit when new business comes into our town . Instead of the deer in headlights look when presented with a landscaping plan that is way above and beyond what you require howabout a little poker face and ask for just a little more? Just a thought but if this happens consistently you should maybe review what your minimum requirements are. You should also look into requireing new businesses moving into old buildings to do at least some outside improvements.Im not talking revamp but just some upgrade. The same with existing businesses doing a remodel. Get them to do some outside work as well as inside. Our planning and zoning motto should be ''we will never allow another asphalt sea like KMART to ever happen again'' Happy New Year everyone and lets make 2009 the year the city of Craig raises the bar.

Way to go Trish. Nice to see a school board member out there making us proud of our school with daily tastless commentary and behavior. Maybe next year we can have team condom tossing at the homecoming day parade. The winners get to sit in the “special section” at the game with you. Will you supply the pop?

I hope the rec center crowd pays very close attention to the final results of this poll.

Good stuff taxslave. The government buying all the debt so we can start all over again is not the answer. For the last 25-30 years we have created an economy that requires us to spend more than we make to keep things going. Well, the credit ran out in the late 90;s so we started the housing bubble that bought us another ten years of irresponsability. When that horse ran out of steam everybody jumped on the commodity bandwagon and that finished the economy off. Bottom line is even if the government dumps money into the banks, with tighter lending standards fewer people will be able to qualify for loans (not a bad thing, everybody qualifying, thats what caused this mess). Still waiting for them to address the real problem.

I wonder if the editorial board is against a rec center because it would be redundant.

This bill if passed will do nothing but float the banks. The three major forces that drove the economy for the last ten years have been shattered . The three were cheap gas, easy to get credit at historical low rates and lastly homes that apreciated at 20 to 25% a year and more. This bill will not restore home values much less bring back the good old bubble days of 20 to 25% apreciation. This bill will help the banks but if they tighten standards on loan applicatons(as they should) then fewer people can get loans which also will not bring back those good old irresponsible, care free days. And lastly ,this bill does absolutely nothing about the other side of the problem. The one thing thats removing money from peoples pockets as fast as the housing correction. The price of fuel. The price of fuel effects the price of absolutely everything. If we are to ever be serious about reviving the economy and putting money back in peoples pockets this side of the two headed monster cannot be ignored. Remember folks, the last time oil was $90 a barrel gas was $3.09 a gallon. Last I checked $3.92 wasent even close. Whose pocket is being filled now. In the ninties we had a technology bubble, followed by the real estate bubble. Do I smell a commodity bubble? One thing is certain,no matter what the economic climate sombody always finds a way to make money. Which is good, its the American way but in this case its at the expense of our economy.

Another sad commentary on what passes for local medicine. Unless its life threatening I would suggest a trip to Steamboat Springs. They have a good track record and reputation. But dont worry folks, the new building will solve all this .
