Ranger52and kp81625 you are really getting the points across. This is the start of station 2 but it's a ploy. They build a training tower, and then they allocate money each year to add on, before you know it, station 2 is here. So when we go to the board meeting we need to ask why there is money (aprox 500k or so) being allocated for future projects? This is just the start, I would love a training tower, but the people (on average) are showing that it is not what they want. This is not a good idea, but it will be hard to stop. Since the department already has the start money, it will take the change of leadership to start it. I want training but Hayden is close enough, and the tower there is not next to a hospital or houses, it's safer that way.
Hey ranger520, xrsareus is just messing around with me. Xrsareus doesn't share our views but has valid points. After this is finished and I no longer work where I work I may post a you-tube video for him. Kind of like the video the board president was in and posted in the paper(only hopefully more details and more valid facts) including a paranoid rant. Ranger520 you have a lot of great points and we seem to be on the same page with this discussion. Keep up the good work and I'll keep posting what I hear.
xrsareus I do agree with you. These posts help people form questions, but the real place these should be asked is in the board meeting (3rd Thursday of every month at the Fire Station). And the meeting was nice when they held it in the class room, that's where they held it the first time this was really brought up to the public. But I agree that the meeting room is to small. With its 5-7 seats on the South wall and the 9 to 11 seats on the east side. Most are filled with Firefighters waiting for a pension board meeting. The reason it is normally used is because it is the easiest and best way to set up the recording device for the meeting notes. Oh you can get the fire board meeting notes on the web site http://www.craigfirerescue.org/minutes.htm but (and here is where I go into a paranoid rant) they haven't been updated since January 2012. But I like your posts, we don't agree on a lot of things but you (xrsareus) don't get dragged down by the little things. I do wish to see you at the next meeting, I hope things go well. And I want to clear up some things. I do want a burn tower, but only if the public is fully informed, no secrets. I want and always will be a servent of the public, they are the ones the need to be protected and they are the ones that pay the bills.
I respect your ideas, and you are right? You posted that the Hayden burn tower is outside of town, not next to residential or a college or a hospital. Interesting point, I hadn’t thought of that. So Hayden is in a safe spot. It is something to think about. Also one person can make a difference, but politics in this town are difficult. On a different point why is there more money allocated in the budget for next year for this same project (or this area), aprox. 500K. And for the year after that and after that and so on (in projected costs). I have no problems with the firefighters, but this is a bad decision by the board/ Chief and there are facts that the public doesn’t know. The firefighters do their job, I should know( I am one). Steamboat has no trouble with training in Hayden and they are a little farther away. I support the officials when their ideas are good but when they aren’t I speak up and try to help. These blogs will be used to help people better understand all the facts, even yours. So please keep trying to get more facts out, just like your last post, it was a point I hadn’t thought about.
It would be nice to have, but like ranger 520 says there is a tower in Hayden. I don't know of any burn towers in the country that are that close to each other. Steamboat has no problems with using Haydens tower. I don't think we are getting the whole story. Why build this so close to houses, the college or the hospital. I think people are looking at the fact that we are getting free land from the college and not the placment of a building like this. Also what is the bottom line dollar, I know they have a million or so, but why is the budget projecting another 500k in the upcoming years. Also didn't the Fire Department Burn a building last year around 1st and Ranney St., I think the video said that they haven't burned a building in 4 to 5 years. Like I said this isn't the whole story.
Just needed to post so this doesn't get swept under the rug, the talk around town is that at the next City Council meeting this may be brought up with new information. It seems this may not have been a one time thing, this was just the first time the public learned about it. Also this may not be the only thing being covered up. I will keep you posted with any new information I get. Question to all the people, Who wrote the letter of reprimand? According to what I've read if it was anyone but the City Manager, this may have been illeagle.
Thanks 520 I was working and couldn't get back to post my answer to xrareus. The reason I can't run is my job, Conflict of interest. But I know what a special district is and I know the CRS laws and bi laws they have to follow in the “Craig Rural Fire Protection District”. This is why I am posting. I am wondering why you don’t run. You seem to have a passion for this. I’m not being a jerk, but if you know what you say you know tell us. What is your definition of a special district and what do you know of the Fire Board procedures. If I am wrong with any of my facts or opinions I am open to say so. But if we all have facts and we can combine them maybe we can figure out a plan. I may be too far right and you may be too far left, but maybe the answer is in the middle. Anyway, not an attack, just trying to get information out. Thanks for the response.
Rebelgirl, my opinion and facts are valid, but if they aren't please state the facts you know. I am only here to inform and if I could run for the board I would, but that is not how it REALLY works. I wish I could change things by myself but I am only one person and it takes a community to govern itself. I am not saying you are wrong, your opinion is valid. But so is mine. No one questions the people on the Fire Department's heart, just the financial problems. Because this is your money to.
Xrsareus I like your fire, and you are right I need to tell you what I know.
First, the tax payers voted down (about 5-10 years ago) the first time the Fire Department wanted to do something like this (second station mentioned in the video), so Craig Fire came back with a 10 year plan and a mil levy increase and got it. They argue that they are on track, but I you can judge for yourself; they aren't even close in my book. You can ask for a copy of this but they don't make it easy to get it. So they asked for money and then didn't do what they said they would (my opinion). Now they say they are going to do this project (they have close to a million or so), but they don't have all the money they need, they only have the money to start. They aren't even considering doing a mil levy decrease; because they think the money could be used later on. I say if they need the money they should have to ask the people that are paying their bills.
Second, wind patterns on hospital hill are unpredictable and you can't tell me that burning things next to a hospital is a good idea. But they say they will use propane if the winds are bad. Propane is expensive and the tax payers are the one footing the bill. So what happens when the smoke goes into the hospital, who gets hurt then? We aren’t talking about the camp fires we all like, the video mentions chairs and other material. These can give off toxic gases, that is why the firefighters where breathing protection. So in this light is it good to put this next to the hospital? But even better where is the smoke going to go instead of the hospital, Shadow Mountain trailer park or maybe to the gas stop on the corner.
Third, the ISO rating that they say is going to help us lower taxes is very sketchy. The best way to help an ISO rating is put a building up, put a couple of trucks in it and an office and call it a station, not a burn tower. The ISO rating is based on response to a scene, hydrant flow, equipment and a list of other things, not just training. We don’t meet hydrant flow testing requirements, which the fire department can do (but don’t have to). This could help the ISO rating and only take time (volunteer department), but it’s not as fun as a burn tower.
Fourth but not final, this is not up for a vote. This is going to happen with the current people in charge. They aren’t asking us anything, they are going to do this. They have the money to start and they are going to continue to spend 500 to 600 thousand dollars a year after until this project is finished. There is no stopping this unless the board is recalled and the chief is relieved of his command.
I do have more but I think you get the idea. I want people to ask and argue, that is what needs to happen. The fire department is a great bunch of people but financially this is a bad idea. Just because they save your house or they are real nice to you doesn’t mean that they get a blank check.
Craig fire burned a building last year, He said they haven't done it in 4 to 5 years. Also who can predict the winds. Even if they are sure how can it be shut down in time to not affect the hospital, it's not 100 percent safe. Dosen't the Fire Department say "Safety First always". This is not the whole story, they aren't telling us everything we need to stop this.
