Moffat County Memorial Day activities slated to remember fallen veterans

For American Legion Post 62 Commander Jake Garcia, the idea behind Memorial Day is simple. “It’s to respect and honor the fallen members of the military,” Garcia said. Craig and Moffat County residents will have several chances to pay those respects this holiday weekend. The first opportunity will come today during the Grand Olde West Days parade. Setup for the parade starts at 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Craig Middle School before officially beginning at 4 p.m. The route runs down Yampa Avenue, turns right onto Victory Way and right on Ledford Street before ending at Sandrock Ridge Care & Rehab.
Mitt Romney … meet Craig, America

Frank Moe, owner of Deer Park Inn and Suites in Craig, sent Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign a video earlier this year produced by Energy America. The video, titled “The Perfect Storm Over Craig, Colorado,” highlighted the community’s economic dependence on the energy industry. Along with the video was an invitation from Moe to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to visit Craig. “We (thought) this would be a good place for him to make the point that he is (in favor of) all forms of energy,” Moe said.

When Craig Police Department officer Mike Edwards knocked on the door of a burning house on the night of Feb. 7, he didn’t expect anyone to answer. “People were saying, ‘There’s nobody in there,’ but for some reason, with a car parked in the driveway, I didn’t know if there was anybody in the house,” said Edwards, a 10-year police veteran. “I went up and knocked on the door and a guy from the inside said, ‘Come on in.’” The man inside the house, 75-year-old Patrick Hunter, was trying to escape from a fire that was engulfing his home at 1912 Woodlawn, a fire that claimed the life of his ex-wife and live-in companion, Ursula Hunter.
Former school official seeking to improve community

In 2005, Joel Sheridan noticed a problem. “I had come in contact with a couple situations where some students were missing a lot of school, spending time in the nurse’s office because of dental issues,” said Sheridan, then assistant superintendent of the Moffat County School District. To find a solution to the dental problems he saw, Sheridan, now 63, contacted the Northwest Colorado Dental Coalition, a nonprofit group that offers comprehensive dental care to area residents in need. “I started talking to the executive director at that time, trying to learn more about what was going on,” Sheridan said. “Through those conversations I ended up being on the board (of directors).”
Craig resident using people skills to help community

Myrtle Stagner is a people person. “I like to interact with people,” the 70-year-old Craig resident said. “It’s very rewarding.” This desire for interaction helped guide Stagner through various professional ventures. Since settling in Craig with her husband, Claude, about 27 years ago, the Pagoda native spent 10 years working at Kmart, operated a Curves For Women health center for four years and spent about a year working at Walmart.
Tea party hosting tax day Freedom Rally on Tuesday

An annual tax day Freedom Rally hosted by the Bears Ears Tea Party Patriots is slated for 5 p.m. Tuesday on the Moffat County Courthouse lawn, 221 W. Victory Way. Tea party chapter member Matt Winey said there are two purposes to the rally. “Part of it is a protest against high taxes and part of it is a rally to get everyone fired up,” he said. “It’s an election year … so it’s about getting people fired up about their freedom.” Several people are scheduled to present during the rally, headlined by Grand Junction singer Joyce Schaffer, known for writing music with a patriotic theme.
Moffat County Job Fair sees respectable turnout

More than 150 potential employees lined the hallways Friday of Colorado Northwestern Community College’s Craig campus in hopes of finding a job prospect at the 2012 Moffat County Job Fair. The fair, sponsored by CNCC, the Colorado Workforce Center and the Craig Daily Press, hosted booths for 19 employers, many of them local. Bonnie Stewart, fair organizer and Craig Daily Press advertising manager, said she thought the event was a success.
Turnout high for 1st mobile food pantry distribution

Moffat County residents lined up Thursday morning outside the Boys & Girls Club of Craig waiting for Food Bank of the Rockies’ mobile food pantry to make its first distribution in Craig. “There was a big rush at 11:30 (when distribution began),” said Starlene Collins, Western Slope manager for FBR, noting that about 92 people received assistance in the first half of the two-hour distribution alone. According to the agency’s website, FBR utilizes its mobile pantries in areas where partner agencies are either not available, or as is the case locally, may need help meeting the needs of the community.
Craig man facing additional charges
39-year-old child porn suspect charged in Fremont County

A 39-year-old Craig man arrested in January on suspicion of sexual exploitation of a child now faces sexual assault charges in another jurisdiction. According to court records, the suspect is charged in Fremont County with two counts of sexual assault on a child from a person in a position of trust — victim under 15, and two counts of sexual assault on a child, pattern of abuse, all Class 3 felonies. Freemont County authorities filed an affidavit for a warrant for the suspect’s arrest in February while he was in custody at Moffat County Jail. Formal charges were filed March 19, according to court records.
Weather makes weekend busy for firefighters

High winds and dry conditions caused several prescribed fires to burn out of control over the weekend, fire officials reported Monday. Captain Troy Hampton of Craig Fire/Rescue said firefighters were called to contain three fires Saturday and Sunday resulting from controlled burns in area ditches that spread past predetermined boundaries. “There were two on (Colorado) Highway 13 and one … on highway 394,” Hampton said. A Bureau of Land Management fire crew contained an additional fire on Colorado Highway 13 that started after a recreational vehicle towing a car sustained a blown tire.
