Moffat County girls basketball team sends seniors off with a bang

Craig — The Moffat County girls basketball sent its four seniors out with a bang Saturday night, blowing past visiting Delta High School, 83-51, in the Bulldogs last regular season home game of the year.

Moffat County (17-3 overall, 10-1 league) is tied for first place in the Western Slope League with Glenwood Springs and to have an opportunity to host the regional tournament beginning in a few weeks, the Bulldogs needed a win.

On Saturday, MCHS got it.

Moffat County never trailed in the game, and parlayed a 23-point halftime lead into a 32-point victory.

“To be a great playoff team, we have to beat the teams we are supposed to,” Moffat County coach Craig Mortensen said. “I’m pleased we won, but it’s a game we had no business losing. We took care of business and got the job done.”

The 83 points scored tied the Bulldogs’ season-high offensive output from the last time these two teams met in Delta.

Moffat County used a balanced attack with all four senior players finishing in double digits.

Senior Angie Charchalis tallied 19, senior Markie Workman bullied her way to 17, senior Jorgiea Raftopoulos buried four treys on her way to a 16-point effort and senior Amy Dilldine slashed her way to 12.

“We just wanted to go out and have fun on the court for our last time,” Dilldine said. “We have played really well as a team this year, and we all really appreciate one another. It’s sad to possibly leave this court for the last time, but we’ve had a great run here in our house.”

Notes:

The seniors sat the fourth quarter, but Mortensen checked them back in with 1:20 remaining so they could leave together 10 seconds later to an ovation, the first time he’s done that in his 32-year career.
