In 2004, the Gymstar Fun N Fit squad qualified five gymnasts for the state tournament.
This year, twice as many tumblers qualified, with eight of 10 placing en route to a sixth-place team finish at the Colorado EAGLES state championships held in Castle Rock.
EAGLES stands for Elementary, Artistic, Gymnastics, League & Education System.
“This was the first time we’ve been able to take that many girls,” said Kelly Davidson, owner and head coach at Gymstar Fun N Fit Gymnastics. “We took 10 girls, and we were on the podium for almost all the girls.”
Gymnasts range in age from 6 to 12 years old and competed at levels three — for beginning competitors — and four, which is considered more advanced.
A total of 107 gymnasts competed at the level three category, and 116 in level four.
Krystle Bohrer, 12, and Kaleya Moya, 11, represented level four.
Bohrer came in first in the vault with a score of 9.6, and Moya placed eighth in all-around with 36.45 points.
The gymnasts competed in any one of four events, which comprise the all-around score — vault, bars, balance beam and floor.
Six of the eight level-three competitors placed in the top-10.
Jaidyn Steele, 6, placed second in the bars with 9.5 and fourth all-around with 36.25 points.
Allison Irwin, 6, picked up three fifth-place finishes — vault (9.2), beam (9.2) and all-around (36.00).
Amber Newell, 6, was fourth in beam with 9.05.
Dajia Lewis, 7, placed fifth on bars with 9.05.
Kinlie Brennise, 6, came in third in the bars with a score of 9.25.
Dani Hauger, 9, was fourth all-around with 36.65.
Addie Dietrich, 6, and Samantha Ahlmer, 10, competed but didn’t place in the top-10.
