JD Hays escorts James Brown in September 1993 when the city of Steamboat Springs dedicated the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge.
Steamboat Springs Police Department officers used to wear Wrangler jeans and were issued cowboy hats as part of their uniform.
JD Hays was a power hitter and earned the nickname "Slugger" when he played on the department’s softball team, which was named Hays’ Hosers.
