Communities at work: Darling dogs October 3, 2009
Glenna Grandbouche and Amy Andrews opened their business, Canine Unlimited LLC, a year ago on Oct. 1. They specialize in private training and animal behavioral change programs as well as offer other pet services to the Craig community. The year was a success, Grandbouche said, and plans are in the making for further community involvement and education. Andrews spent 13 years as the Craig animal control officer and worked as a veterinarian's assistant for five years before teaming up with Grandbouche and becoming a certified dog groomer. The company's emphasis on behavioral wellbeing and providing a low-stress environment are evident in the dogs they tend to at the shop. The dogs take turns playing with a number of toys in their indoor picket-fenced area with tails wagging. Glenna Grandbouche, co-owner of Canine Unlimited LLC, air dries Lady, a black Labrador retriever, during the final step of grooming Thursday. Grandbouche is a certified dog trainer and is finishing up the process of becoming a certified animal behavioral consultant. Grandbouche, along with Amy Andrews, opened the doors to their business a year ago.
Amy Andrews, co-owner of Canine Unlimited LLC, trims the beard of a schnauzer named Jack in her shop at 1592 W. Victory Way in Craig. The business not only grooms animals, but also offers educational classes and personalized training programs. Some of the classes include a dog bite prevention program with some sessions aimed toward children and others toward adults. Another is called "Dogs and Storks," in which expecting parents learn to safely incorporate their dog into their growing family.
Grandbouche tosses a ball to Lady while she waits for her owner to pick her up from her grooming session. Dogs take turns playing with toys in the inside exercise/training area, which is also used for training classes. Canine Unlimited LLC believes in having a stress-free environment to better a dog's behavioral characteristics.
Andrews washes Nike, a cocker spaniel, in a bathtub designed specifically for dogs. The tub includes a ramp to the top and various levels for different size dogs to stand on without being submerged.
Andrews finishes grooming Jack on a Lip System Table at her shop in Craig. The table includes features that allow groomers to work on geriatric dogs, and mechanically changes the level of the table. On average, Canine Unlimited LLC cares for about eight dogs a day. Andrews is also starting a K-9 and Feline Wellness Education program that should begin within the month.
