Communities at Work: Hot stuff August 1, 2009
It's a hot summer day, but the temperature outside is nothing compared to the press inside at Loyd's Cleaners and Clothiers, 552 Breeze St. The machine is used to press clothes after they've been cleaned. "It's hot," Loyd's owner Betty Barnes said, "you touch it, and you know." "I've got the war wounds to prove it," joked Lydia Johnston, Barnes' sole employee. Still, the duo keeps a fun atmosphere in the shop while they toil away cleaning and pressing. Barnes purchased the store more than six years ago, but the business opened its doors 40 years ago. Loyd's takes care of dry cleaning, washing and folding laundry, alterations, tuxedo and wedding dress rentals, and household items, such as drapery.
Betty Barnes, left, helps Lydia Johnston press an American flag at Loyd's Cleaners and Clothiers on July 24. Loyd's cleans and presses flags for free as a public service, Johnston said.
