Win-win situation January 12, 2008
The Hayden Marketplace, 144 Walnut St. in downtown Hayden, has its walls lined with art. From painting and photography to leather and jewelry, what’s inside is a smattering of just about every discipline. The marketplace is supported by its 28 members, who live anywhere from McCoy to Steamboat to Craig to Lay, who work two four-hour shifts a month, keeping the store staffed. They also pay a membership fee and rent, which keeps it running. When a piece of art is sold, the money goes back to the artist at the end of the month, and the store keeps 10 percent. “It’s a win-win for everybody,” said Ann Copeland, president and contributing artist of the Hayden Marketplace on Historic Walnut Street, LLC. “A win for the valley and a win for the members.”
Ann Copeland hangs the necklace she just made on her display in the store. She fashioned the centerpiece of the necklace out of “Colorado Sea Glass,” a name she’s given glass that is broken and tumbled for a month in a rock tumbler.
