'Cookie season'

“It’s cookie season.” Those were Becky Forquer’s words Friday as she looked through the paperwork of Girl Scout cookie orders. She would know. She is the cookie sales manager and one of three cookie cupboards on the Western Slope. Once a year, the 11 area Girl Scout troops sell cookies as part of the nationwide tradition that began more than 80 years ago. This year, 1,437 cases, numbering 17,244 individual boxes, will be delivered and sold within the next few weeks. The Scouts began taking orders for the Girl Scout cookies Jan. 11, going door-to-door. The cookies’ arrival date was Wednesday, but delivering and booth sales began Friday.

Sarah Schwingdorf, 7, of Girl Scouts Troop 202, helps a customer Friday at the troop’s booth at Moffat County High School. Selling cookies encourages the young girls to be more open, Becky Forquer said. “It brings out a little bit of confidence in the girls.”
