Craig at Work: Flower power July 7, 2007
Shelia O'Mailia starts her day at 5 a.m. in order to reach all of the City of Craig's flowers. O'Mailia, along with other Parks and Recreation Department seasonal employee, Adriane Zachary, waters planters and hanging baskets scattered throughout the city each day and fertilize the plants once a week. So what does O'Mailia enjoy about being outside all day and caring for plants? "Pretty much everything," she said. "Compared to the type of work I've done, I call this my gravy job." The self-proclaimed "water boy" is a familiar face in town and gets many waves and "hellos" as she works. She had the same job in 1999 and 2000 and said there are many more flowers to plant now than before. "And they're going to try and add more planters next year to beautify Craig," O'Mailia said.
Shelia O'Mailia waters flowers Thursday afternoon along Victory Way. As a seasonal worker for the City of Craig Parks and Recreation Department, O'Mailia said she loves her job. The hardest part is driving the large truck around.
