Candidates emerge for April’s municipal election, including contested mayoral race

Less than one week into the municipal campaign period and Craig already has a contested race for mayor as well as five candidates running for three open City Council seats. There’s still plenty of time for more candidates to jump into the fray; residents interested in vying for the mayoral or City Council seats have two more weeks to file ballot petitions.

City, county leaders reflect on 2011

The last year has been productive for Moffat County, said Tom Mathers, chairman of the three-member Moffat County Commission. Twentymile Mine announced it is moving into a new pit, Western Fuels-Colorado, LLC acquired Colowyo Coal Co. and years of fiscally conservative policies have resulted in growth in the county’s general fund. “Those things are huge and there’s a lot to be positive about,” Mathers said. “I don’t want to steal any thunder from our state of the county speech, which we do every year in February, but this was a very good year for Moffat County. “We planned for the worst and it came in a lot better than we thought it would.”

Mayor receives award for leadership training

Thousands of elected leaders have gone through and completed the Colorado Municipal League’s leadership training program. One more was added to the list this week.

Craig voters elect new mayor, city council members

Voting results from today’s Craig municipal election are now finalized and city voters have elected a new mayor and three city council members. Turnout was 51.9 percent in the all mail-in ballot.

AARP chapter hosts forum with mayoral, council contenders

Craig resident Marlene Griffin has yet to fill out her ballot for Craig’s municipal election. The 74-year-old Griffin said it'll be hard to sit down and pick which candidate should be Craig’s new mayor, as well as decide between six candidates vying for three council positions in the April 5 municipal election. However, she said attending Monday’s candidate forum hosted by Craig AARP Chapter No. 1418 at Sunset Meadows I would help her make a decision on the city offices.
