Winter vehicle preparation checklist

Before the snow flies, be sure to prepare your vehicle for the cold temperatures and icy conditions that come with it. AAA recommends checking the following items on your vehicle in advance of winter, and recommends drivers refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for maintenance recommendations.

Drive prepared with proper tires

Winter is approaching and one of the most important things that we tend to forget about or put off until the last minute is one of the most important things — the tires on our vehicles. They are the only thing between us and our families and the road while driving.

Protect your investment with proper oil care

The easiest way to choose the right oil for your engine is to lift your car’s hood. In the majority of late model vehicles, the specification is written on your oil cap. You can safely run this oil in your car year-round.

Keeping your car fully charged in frigid weather

In the often brutal cold winters of Northwest Colorado, one of the most important things you can do to make sure that you get to work, or for you and your family’s safety, is to maintain your car’s battery. An engine at -30° F requires double the battery power to turn it over at 60° F.

Simple tips to get wipers in check

When preparing your car for the winter months, it is very important that your windshield wipers don’t get overlooked. A simple quality test is to pull on the end of the wiper. If the rubber is separating away from the blade, now is the time for replacement.

Make sure all systems are go for winter

Getting prepared for winter is very important for you and your vehicle. If your cooling system is not working properly, you may have issues with your vehicle overheating or not getting heat out of your heater. This could be caused by leaks in your hoses, low anti-freeze or improper mixture of your anti-freeze (a contaminated system).
