Craig Fire/Rescue responded to two fires Wednesday afternoon. Pictured above, a Craig firefighter fights a small grass fire at about 2 p.m. in the Western Knolls subdivision about seven miles west of Craig. The fire consumed about 1.6 acres of private land before it was put out. No structures were destroyed in the blaze. Troy Hampton, a lieutenant with the fire department, said the cause of the fire was unknown as of Wednesday evening. The Craig Fire Department also responded to two other grass fires at about 1:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 40 less than a mile west of Craig. Battalion Chief Dennis Jones said the fires were close enough that they joined together and consumed about 25 acres of private land before they were extinguished. No structures were harmed. Jones said the larger of the two fires seemed suspicious, and officials still are investigating its cause.
